#428,320 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I had no experience in JavaScript, all my coding was done in C#.NET, Delphi, Java and before reading this book first I started with JavaScript, the Good Parts book and failed...then moved to Secrets of JavaScript Ninja book and again failed, they were not for beginners...Then I came to this one and awesome book. It is from beginner to Professional all in one. Don't worry about the size of the book if you are a developer you can read it much faster because you don't really need all of it if it is teaching you what is a variable and fast forward to the parts you don't know...If you are new to JavaScript first read this book before reading the other two books I mentioned above.

Overall useful for experienced developers of any language. That is to say, if you are a beginner programmer, I would find another book (and language quite frankly). As far as the good, this book seems to cover everything that deals with JavaScript and the browser without bringing in frameworks and libraries. The reason I rate this 4 instead of 5 is because it's organized a bit strange. For example, the author spends a lot of time talking about what variables are, the different types of variables (primitive values and references), and how they are copied. The thing is that there aren't any surprises here, and he could have explained this in about half the space. Additionally, he talks a lot about how scope, variables, and execution context pertain to objects prior to ever explaining what objects are. He then calls out with and try/catch. Then he only explains with, but the example cannot be executed yet because with is a way to assign execution context to a single object. He doesn't explain try/catch for JavaScript at all. Moreover, if you read JavaScript: The Good Parts by Crockford, he explains why with is actually quite ambiguous and will silently create undefined global variables if you attempt to access undefined properties. No mention of this in Professional JavaScriptThis is all just to get to this point: There is a lot of good information here. However, the information isn't well organized, and I am not sure who the audience is. Some of the information is also incomplete. If you're an experienced programmer learning JavaScript this is a fine starting point. There are other starting points to consider too. For my tastes, I would prefer something that is better organized and went more indepth into the language features and spent less time explaining standard concepts in OO languages. Or do so and market the book as a beginner's book.

There is a line from Lion King where little Simba comments on his Uncle Scar's weirdness. Scar replies "You have no idea." The main point of this review is that Javascript is a really weird contraption, and that this book points this out in a way that is very helpful for programmers coming from more traditional compiled programming languages. I have programmed in C, C++, Java, C# for many years. I have read other books on Javascript which tried to teach by examples. With normal programming languages, this works fine. However, within a few hours with this book I realized that to understand Javascript, you must give up on some basic expectations you may have as a code developer. This was a surprise to me, but crucial to be able to learn Javascript well enough to work on non-trivial projects with existing code. Javascript is simply bizarre. There are many different ways to implement object-oriented patterns which all use different-looking code, and have subtle differences, making it so easy to get bitten by unintended consequences. From this book I learned that there is no one solid way to implement the basic pattern of your code, you must make a choice. If you try to read a Javascript book which teaches by examples, you will be in trouble when you actually start to modify someone else's Javascript code which used a different pattern. This book doesn't just show trivial examples, it methodically goes through how it works in enough detail so you can understand how it is working under the hood. Also, the text has plenty of warnings about buggy implementations and common pitfalls. After you get about 1/4 of the way through it you will be wondering how any Javascript code runs on Internet Explorer at all, since about every other page is another 'this-is-broken-in-IE' warning boxes. The text is written in a very clear style, never glossing over anything. It isn't at all cute or made to be entertaining, just kind of down to business. There is no question I will be using this book nearly every time I have to work on Javascript code. If you are just looking to make a little mouse button handler in a web page, this is probably not the book for you. It does not jump right into little useful examples. If you are coming from a programming background in traditional compiled languages, and you want to know more about Javascript than little tiny scripts, IMHO this book is absolutely necessary. You will never regret purchasing it.

I've almost finished this book (up to Chapter 23 out of 25). I taught myself web development over the past few years and so would describe my skills as intermediate, and was lacking understanding in some areas. This book contains a lot of good explanations of how JavaScript works and how to use it to its full potential. There are plenty of useful code snippets that the author presents and then explains. He also includes cross-browser solutions to various issues which is very helpful. The author introduces various new JavaScript APIs associated with HTML5 which are gaining fairly good browser support as of early 2014.Although this third edition was written a few years ago, it is still highly relevant. Just a tip for others buying the third edition - you might want to skip over Chapter 19: Ecmascript for XML. It describes E4X; a technology which has since been deprecated.

Amazon.com Review

"Art literacy is as simple as opening the pages of a children's book." In her introduction to Wings of an Artist, Julie Cummins discusses the importance of exposing young people to art during their formative years, especially through picture books. Twenty-three illustrators, including Maurice Sendak and Graeme Base, are allotted one big page each to describe in pictures and words how they became artists, in spite of or thanks to reactions from others. Under her glorious picture of a flying dragon with myriad colorful critters on its back, Woodleigh Marx Hubbard tells readers what all her art teachers told her: "You have no talent. Give it up!" She couldn't. She didn't. Michael McCurdy's father was a commercial artist who gave his son scratchboard to scribble on--and the inspiration to bring "dark surfaces into the light." The variety of artistic styles, media, and methods represented in this book beautifully reflects the diversity of the artistic world. An activity guide offers an array of fun, useful exercises to open any creative mind. Young artists--and readers who have never even picked up a paintbrush--will be filled with the desire to start interpreting their world through pen and ink, watercolor, crayon, collage--whatever it takes. All proceeds from this book go to the American Library Association's Association for Library Service to Children, as part of a nationwide effort to promote art literacy. From Library Journal

Grade 4 Up-Aspiring artists, young and old, will be drawn to this collection of text and illustrations by 20 well-known picture-book illustrators. A single oversized page is given to each artist (e.g., Susan Jeffers, Maira Kalman, James Ransome, David Small), or in a few cases, an artistic duo (e.g., Leo & Diane Dillon, Steve Johnson & Lou Fancher, Jean & Mou-Sien Tseng), in which to express his/her feelings about art, inspiration, books, and life through a combination of pictures and words. One of the most compelling aspects of the book is how these creators approached the same task with very different results. Some chose a selection from their published body of work while others appear to have created illustrations specifically for this publication. The stylistic differences will serve as a launching pad for discussion, and readers may be prompted to seek out titles by illustrators with whom they are less familiar. While this title may not have mass appeal, it will serve as a useful art-education tool and as a stepping stone to discussions of fine art. An introduction and an idea-rich activity guide are also included. Broader and less detailed in scope than Leonard Marcus's A Caldecott Celebration: Six Artists Share Their Paths to the Caldecott Medal (Walker, 1998), this volume is a charming addition to the body of literature about the world of picture books.Rosalyn Pierini, San Luis Obispo City-County Library, CA Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Imagine for a moment that you bring together twenty or so children's book illustrators and ask them to explain in words and pictures: "What gives flight to an artist's imagination?" This is exactly what Wings of an Artist does. The result is a rich mosaic of exquisite illustrations and writing that are both inspired and inspiring. In the oversized pages, Leo and Diane Dillon discuss how they created a new version of Mother Goose. (They gave her a flying machine so she could "soar amongst the clouds with her beloved geese to faraway lands with new tales to tell.")Maurice Sendak talks about doodling. It is, he writes, "an excellent exercise for stirring up the unconscious, just as you would stir up some mysterious soup all the while hoping it tastes good."In prose and pictures David Catrow relates to the reader his confrontation with his first editor-his first-grade art teacher. And Graeme Base "shows off" a shimmering illustration of Finny, Pearl, and Bert, three undersea characters from The Sign of the Seahorse. The book concludes with "Invitations to Fly," eleven well-thought-out and enriching activities. The classroom uses for this book are countless. In one third grade classroom we read aloud from the book then discussed how the various artists used line, shape, and even color to create certain feelings in the reader. In a second grade classroom we compared and contrasted two different artists. We then did an in-depth "author/illustrator study" of Maurice Sendak.Reviewed by the Educaiton Oasis staff.

Always indirectly discouraged to pursue art, I've spent over 40 years collecting children's books and secretly wishing to be a children's book illustrator. This book is criticized for limited artwork and snippets of advice from each illustrator, but it speaks volumes of encouragement to one interested in art. Sadly underrated, this book has turned my life around, and for this alone it is priceless. There are now many books on technique and the industry itself, so perhaps when this book was published, it appeared lacking. I encourage you to borrow this book from the library and form your own assessment, whether for yourself or a child.

This book covers twenty-one illustrators. Each Illustrator is given a brief bit of information, a few paragraphs of information, sometimes just a snippet and one is given three sentences!Generally a single illustration example is given to each illustrator. One of the illustrators has a picture of himself (probably self-portrait?) and no book illustration. This book has 32 pages. A sampling. This book needs to be padded with more infomation about each illustrator and more examples of illustrations by each artist. Great topic, Excellent book title, pity it lacks content.

How many times, when reading a good book, have you wished for the opportunity to meet with the author, ask them questions about their work, their influences and inspirations? And when reading or being read to is an important part of a child's life, it's natural to assume the desire is just as intense. "Who made this book? Its pictures? What led them to create this story and these pictures for me?" For parents and children alike, some of these questions are answered in the book "Wings of an Artist: Children's Book Illustrators Talk About Their Art" .Picture books are, for children, the introduction to the worlds of both literacy and art appreciation. "Wings of an Artist" can be seen as a primer for both adults and children into the realm of picture books; it includes images and short statements by some of the leading children's book illustrators working today about their beginnings in the field, their early interests in art and writing and their approaches to the task at hand -- creating compelling, original and entertaining children's books. An array of artist/authors are featured, including Henrik Drescher, William Joyce, Maurice Sendak, Robert Sabuda and James Ransome -- in all, more than twenty of the most prolific and influential creators of current picture books for children. On each page, an illustrator presents an image (most were created especially for this project) and a very brief statement about their work and their introduction to the world of children's book illustration. Some recount the encouragements of parents or teachers, others speak of their early imaginations or love of drawing that led them into the career. It's a rare chance to view the styles of so many top picture book illustrators in one place. But like a sampler platter at a restaurant, you may find something you like, but the portions are too small to be really satisfying. Each artist's statement is only a paragraph or two -- some even less than that -- so it's hard to get the sense of a deep presentation of information. Think of it more as a polite introduction.Although the text of the book is sparse and surfacey, "Wings of an Artist" (italic) is (end italic) an excellent display of picture book artwork. Where the artists' statements seem cursory, their art is expressive and imaginative, showing each illustrator's particular style, technique and visual interpretation: Leo and Diane Dillon give a fanciful new look to Mother Goose, Robert Sabuda's cut-paper collage dances across the page, Steve Johnson and Lou Fancher offer a beautiful and evocative illustration of nighttime storytelling, and Maurice Sendak's 16 panel illustration is an inventive, stream-of-consciousness adventure of a small girl, her doll and an evil television. At the end of the book, "Wings of an Artist" includes an activity guide for adults and children to do together to lead children back into the book's pages and think about the words and images they've come across. It's structured to spark discussion on issues of technique, art history, artistic terminology, personal responses to art and to increase an awareness of visual communication. While the study questions relate to the specific images within the book, they can easily be extrapolated to other picture books for children as well as museum or gallery visits. All proceeds benefit the Association for Library Service to Children division of the American Library Association to promote art literacy in children.

Although this book was probably aimed at children and teachers --and it would be very good for this market..I found it far too shallow for the serious investigator of children's art. The pictures were lovely, and the brief quotes were inspirational but not informative. I would have liked to know more about the artist..how they structure their life..where they work...how they work (in depth description of their techniques.).what generates their drive to succeed and how they overcome obstacles and defeats.

I bought this for my 21 year old son as a gift. At first glance he grimaced and told me he planned to return. Thankfully he gave it a shot. He was surprised at how interested he became in the book after only reading a few pages.

The layout of this book is great. It is broken up into many small sections so that you can either flip through and find new advise every day or read it as a book. The book has a good mix of light and deep topics to keep it from getting stale. Only giving it 4 stars rather than 5 because I was surprised by the Christian aspect of the book. Neither the title or blurb on Amazon hinted at the religious overtone. It sort of felt like getting advise from a friend and suddenly they launch into a evangelical narrative. Overall lovely book, definitely worth the money.

Oh my goodness. It’s like he lived my life and came back to talk to me from the future. I highly recommend this book. He put a lot of things I cried, stressed and drove myself crazy worrying about into perspective and I’m so happy the Lord blessed him with this wisdom to spread around. I’m Giving this book to all of my friends as graduation gifts (I’m the older friend that already graduated) and I can’t wait to pass I.T down to my sisters when they finally hit 20 something. This is truly a blessing and I feel as if my cup is no longer barren. I can pour into someone else’s cup. Thank You. At 23 I understand that it isn’t just me lol. It’s life and there’s so much more to live and enjoy.

Absolutely chock full of preciously helpful truths about 20-something life, this was easily the best purchase I've made this year. I've given several copies to friends and it's on the tip of my tongue as a book I recommend to all my 20-something friends too. I genuinely am thankful for this book. It reads really well too and is also available as an audiobook.

Paul Angone comes alongside you like the best kind of friend in this book. He relates to the pain of growing up. He pokes fun at the ridiculous "rules" that haunt people entering "adulthood." Be careful, while you laugh, cry, and ponder your way through these secrets, you're at risk of developing a bigger, deeper, more purposeful vision for your life... and looking honestly at the crazy twists and turns that will inevitably greet you on the way. This is an easy recommendation for me; for any high-school and college grad I know, it's on the gift list. And frankly, even for those of us "just out" of our twenties, the guidance here continues to apply and encourage. Buy this for all the young-adults you know.

As a 25 year old female who is about to embark on her MBA journey in August, I am really happy that I discover this gem at this time. I loved the insights and perspectives that Paul shared with his readers. It reads really easily and I love how he included many of his own observations and "trials" that he overcame to arrive at these secrets. This book has definitely made me think, reexamine my own life thus far, and ask myself some of the critical questions I should have asked a few years ago.Disclaimer, this book does mention God a handful of times. I personally am okay with it and actually like the fact that the author is showing his authentic self, one of the secrets he shared in the book.Overall, insightful and enjoyable book I'd recommend to any wandering, lost, or content 20 year olds.

I bought this book originally because it sounded great and then it kind of sat on my shelf, staring at me, wondering if I was every going to actually read it. Until I finally picked it up on a whim to bring with me on a beach day in August and then I got really into it, however with the busyness of life I kind of forgot about it again until most recently. So I re-started it and once I did, I couldn't put it down. A few of my friends were like oh a list of something isn't a book and you know what maybe they are right but this book did change me for the better. It inspired me to find a passion in life, to make changes and be a better person. It also encouraged me to take small risks and to motivate me to figure out what I'm doing with my life. It helped me through some pretty tough times and I am glad that it made me feel less alone in all the confusion and roller coaster ride my twenties really are. The author, Paul Angone, is a spectacular writer and from him sharing a piece of his story with us readers made the book feel more personal and he is a truly great guy who is only looking to help others with his advice. I honestly do recommend this book to anyone in their twenties who is going through a rough patch because lets face it, who really knows what they are supposed to, who to be or what their life actually means after graduating or getting ready to. Life is confusing and I am glad that I picked up this book because overall it did help. I even gave it to one of my friends as a suggestive read for him and he wound up loving it as well even though he is half way through it!

I was recommended this book by a friend who just graduated college with me. I ordered the book and it was such a great decision. This was a fantastic book and it has a lot of great advice for young adults. I definitely recommend this book to any twentysomething who is looking for a job or is trying to start their life after college!
