Do you know that feeling when you open a new book and thirstily take in the first few pages and then lean back with a contented smile, reveling in how delicious the lines taste on your soul's tongue?"Surprised by Oxford" by Carolyn Weber was such a read for me.I originally requested the book from the book review program I write for over a year ago, but somehow it got lost on its journey to me. So I sadly requested other books and got on with things, but the thought of it lingered in the back of my mind. I was intrigued by the subject and style-- a memoir (which is a style I love to read!) about a young Canadian woman studying in England, and discovering herself on a journey to a relationship with God-- a journey she later understood she'd been on all along, but never before recognized.I was enchanted by the author's way with words (for instance, she describes her mother as having "the scent of all things comforting and good"-- and, do you know, it immediately takes me back to curling up in my mommy's arms as a little one, nuzzling into her neck and breathing in that very same scent? And she describes Oxford: "The walls were saturated with the thoughts of endless minds across hundreds of years into the present, like a fine chain linked with hopes for the betterment of humankind."), and the way she wove references from classic literature all throughout her experiences. Her love of learning and studying and taking in the world, the way everything she encountered added to her thoughtful questioning, her adoration of The Romantics and flawless incorporation of their wisdom and experiences into her own, and the way England brought it all to life-- it all resonated so deeply with me. I also went to England as an idealistic, inexperienced young girl, and left with horizons widened on my whole world. I think she and I could be kindred friends, and reading her story was like taking a walk together through the beloved Oxfordshire landscape and sharing the struggles of our souls and the encouragement He gives to press on...She wrestled honestly with God. She came from a background with only a vague understanding of Christianity, and many prejudices against it. It was the most unlikely of places to draw up close to Him-- the world of Academics. But one after the other, professors and scholars and friends she greatly respected came out with beliefs which made her question her own lack of them. She became enthralled by this plain of love she saw in some people's lives that she had not experienced. And so she started seeking out what it was that they had and she didn't-- and she didn't like the answer she inevitably came out with. But when she finally accepted that Christ is Who He says He is, her whole world was awashed in a new hue of colour. And the way she is able to encapsulate it in words thrilled my little literature-loving heart. Everything in her existence is touched and illuminated. Even the literature she'd studied for years suddenly read with a new dimension when she opened her eyes to The Holy. A lightbulb moment of the grandest kind. The way she shares her story is so intimate, so detailed, and deep, and beautiful, that I felt honoured to be reading it, as if being imparted with a gift.More and more I am convinced that what the world needs is to hear our stories. Jesus told stories. And crafted stories out of the lives of every one of His followers. He told them to go and share what they had seen and heard-- share their stories. I grow so frustrated so easily carrying around this incredible truth that so few think they want to hear, but as we share our stories-- unassuming, unaggressive, just letting people in-- we are free to just love with no agenda. Sharing our stories is loving like Christ loves, being vulnerable for the sake of someone else who needs to hear what you've lived to share. "Surprised by Oxford" was encouraging as you see a cast of characters coming in and out of Carolyn's life-- some of them for a moment, some of them for years, sharing their stories, unobtrusively, gently, honestly, but deeply-- until, in her own good time, it finally all just "clicks". And then she becomes a voice in the whole cast of characters sharing her story for someone else to one day "click" upon hearing...It is a beautiful economy, this kind King's. "That is the bizarre thing about the good news: who knows how you will really hear it one day, but once you have heard it, I mean really heard it, you can never unhear it. Once you have read it, or spoken it, or thought it, even if it irritates you, even if you hate hearing it or cannot find it feasible, or try to dismiss it, you cannot unhear it, or unspeak it, or unthink it." "Belief is really hard work... And it's radical work. I mean, imagine if we really implemented the golden rule, among individuals as well as nations. If we really did everything from holding doors open for each other, to helping raise each other's kids, to feeding and clothing one another. If we really took God at His Word, and He is real, and so love, and grace, and accountability are too. Like Mother Teresa telling us to love until it hurts, with a smile." "Life is messy. Life is beautiful and terrible and messy. So why would we expect a faith in this life that is easy to understand? Why expect a gift wrapped up neatly within the tissues of our brains and tied with a nice bow of material clarity? ... A round gift is the most difficult to wrap."So beautifully written and honest, "Surprised by Oxford" is, among so many other things, just a delicious joy to soak up. Find yourself a copy and a bit of sunshine to sit in and you will be entertained as well as touched!p.s. I want to move to Oxfordshire even more now!

In Surprised by Oxford, Carolyn Weber shares her journey from agnosticism to Christianity. The story takes place over the course of a year and is set against the backdrop of time spent in graduate study at Oxford University in England, far from her home in Canada. From the prologue, we learn that Carolyn had encountered one evangelical Christian professor during her undergraduate studies. She recounts a conversation she had with him after turning in a paper in which she completely missed the point of a poem by John Dunne, and this seems to be the beginning of her thoughts turning towards God:"The truth is in the paradox... Anything not done in submission to God, anything not done to the glory of God, is doomed to failure, frailty, and futility. This is the unholy trinity we humans fear most. And we should, for we entertain it all the time at the pain and expense of not knowing the real one."The book itself is laid out chronologically, with chapters for each of the terms of the Oxford school calendar. Throughout the course of the year, we are introduced to a wide variety of people - both professors and other students - ranging all the way from atheists to committed Christians. As time progresses and Carolyn moves farther along her journey, we see her begin to examine everything that happens as a potential sign from God. She even talks about this in relation to actual road signs, after getting lost on a day trip to Stonehenge shortly after arriving at Oxford, and going around in circles trying to figure out what direction to go:"It is easy to coast and even easier to mock the signs, but reading them, really reading them, and then making the largest decision there is, the greatest decision to which all others defer and are tied back to--to know who we are, what we stand for, and for what we are responsible--to read the signs and then choose the right way... well, that's hard."There are so many fascinating and beautiful passages in this book, and I was entranced by her description of the moment when she crossed her last internal barrier and took the leap of faith:"It was then that I began to breathe more deeply. To breathe Him in, and the breathe me out.And then, I began, every so slowly, to transform.I did not have to carry everything on my shoulders. I did not have to be everything to everyone. I did not have to know all the answers. Could it be that sometimes glorifying God involves negatives?"There were moments when I would have almost said this book is pretentious, except that the author is so earnest in her exploration of all aspects of faith and the impact it would have on her life. I think it's more that it reflects the intensity of that time in your life when you are realizing how important the question of God's existence really is and are grappling with who you will be when you grow up.And I think we can all take note of the suggestion given to Carolyn by the widow of the undergraduate professor who had started her on the journey, in a letter written after Carolyn shared her new faith and asked for advice:"Oh yes, and have patience--with others, with God, and most importantly, with yourself. For it is by degrees that we truly learn that God is with us always."So true.

#4,703 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Just like the 4th book in the series, this book felt like filler.I am a fan of Ken Lozito and the First Colony books, however, 50% of this book was spent following a character. It could have been done in a more concise way.I also feel that enough time has been spent on the Ryklars. How about new tech? FTL to go back to earth? It might be too early for this, but the ground work can be started in next book.I do still enjoy these books and will continue to buy.

Conner finds life and when he does, it becomes a mission of discovery to figure out to communicate with this NEIIS soldier or is he? What happens when you have first contact and how do you know what their intentions are? I enjoyed this story because Conner's background as a soldier and his ability to think through things becomes a real force in understanding the NEIIS. To find the original inhabitants of the planet is one thing, but to understand how they fit into all strange things on New Earth such as animal life and were they created as weapons of war? I found this a question that I had hoped to get answered by the end of the story, but the story continues. This book leaves a lot of room for the story to continue to unfold as there is intrigue with the new governor and some top people at Sierra so I can't wait to see how this unfolds going forward. Ken writes a great story and I look forward to his next work. One of better writers in my opinion.

The book didn’t get past the first page before the first eyebrow reference. I thought the previous book was ridiculous with the eyebrow references, he’s stepped it up in this book.In a span of 8 lines of writing, Connor has three eyebrow movements that somehow need to be added to the story. At this rate by the end of the book the people will no longer be speaking with their mouth, they will all be communicating with just their eyebrows dancing all over their faces.

I am so engrossed with these character and the story line, I will be sorry to read the last page of book six. I will miss sharing my lunch and spare time with these characters. I haven't felt this way since reading "Bag of Bones' by Stephen King. Which was outstanding. Mr. Lozito has developed each character to the point of feeling like a close friend is sharing a vacation or experience they have had. I love the man character 'Connor', who is a powerful entity. Caring for those around him and willing to die in the quest of maintaining their safety. I have always been one to wonder "what's over that mountain". Or wondering where this road goes....love the adventure of the unknown, and these books have been all of that for me.I you want to participate in a roller coaster ride into our future, then read all six of these books. Excitement on every page.

This novel has managed to keep the series going in a much more interesting plot twist than previous installments. Honestly, I put this series down after book three, read a couple other books before I picked this series up again. The author has left himself a broad list of possibilities where he can take this series. It took a long time to develop this story but it has been worth it.

Discovery was an excellent addition to the series and sees Connor and Noah tasked to explore an unknown and recently discovered NEIIS site. That's about all I can say really, as anything else will reveal too many details of the plot and the secrets found in Discovery are best left to the reader to......well....discover. Suffice to say this latest book in the series had plenty of action, more plot developments and mysteries surrounding the disappearance of the NEIIS (the former inhabitants of New Earth). Looking forward to the next book in the series :)

Connor goes on an excursion to another site but diverge to other and found the incredible... NEIIS'S on stasis pods. A new adventure through New Earth, following an NEIIS that's survived. The NEIIS kidnap Connor and the adventure is one rescue through the continent. At the last, everything reduce to humans self preservation or genocide and the consequences... To add to everything apparently the governor side's maybe are planning a coup of the CDF with the consent of the governor...

I have to admit that I was a bit hesitant to follow this series after the Vemus were finally exterminated but the last 2 books have been as entertaining as the first 3 and I'm looking forward to seeing how this new story line develops. As long as the author keeps writing, I'll keep reading.

This is not a book you read straight through. For a coach, which I am (track), I picked at the chapters. Lots of great information that echoed what I learned in my Level 1 USATF Certification course. However, I felt for a book that had a sprinter on the cover (I'm going with sprinter and not long distance runner) I felt there was very little in the model periodization chapter on track. Lots on other sports laid out in full seasons but nothing for the sport that I bought it for.The book does a good job with all the information and I had no doubt that this was breaking information in the field but it reads a rather clinical and dry way. As a writer, I don't understand why writing these books can't have more sense of play. Otherwise it makes a great sleep aid.My overall take, get this book if you're a coach and just learning about physiology, training and training systems.

Good treatise on physical training with just enough anatomy and biology to help understand the development of bio-mechanics in athletes.

Very good book to read if you are into sports or you are going to become an instructor. I recommend you read it.

Needed for a class but kept it for coaching. Good book.

This is a great reference book. Great descriptions and great pictures. I really enjoy this book. I would highly recommend it.

This is a great book that came in very handy for my class. In great shape as well, would absolutely buy again.

This is a great book to teach you how to train properly. Whether you're training yourself or a group or a team.
