I originally read this book years ago and have since also read "Sicario", which is an excellent book on the Narcos and their inner workings.Since I first read it I decided to skim through it again and it still stands I think as one of the best books out there on the ongoing Mexican Drug War. Grillo digs deep, really deep, to unearth as much as they can about the Narco gangs. He collected a lot of information and got it from a wide variety of sources. From lowest ranks of the cartels; the mules and the street dealers up to the enforcers, to the people who battle them from Mexican journalists to American DEA agents. What is revealed is a very bloody machine that continues to make Mexico one of the deadliest places in the world.First he starts with the earliest traces of drug smuggling in Mexico's history which is really fascinating. We see the introduction of opium to Mexico by Chinese smugglers and eventually the earliest smuggling of marijuana (which was the Cartel's biggest cash cow) during the Mexican Revolution of the 1900s. As well as the older "dons" from Sinaloa who controlled Mexico's narcotic black market in the 1980s and 90s during the big cocaine boom of the time. However, that beast was completely different from the one we see now. Somewhere along the line this old power structure died and violence just exploded in Mexico putting it on part with the violence in Afghanistan.Thats about the time when Grillo first entered the scene. He goes into Mexico from Texas to learn as much as he can. He talks to street dealers in Mexico's border towns, interviews a an ex-police officer turned Cartel enforcer in prison, he talks to mules and hitmen in Colombia. Its really fascinating in a morbid way to see this Narco culture at a ground level. Some of the more eccentric details of the Narco lifestyle involve commissioning Corrido folk bands to make ballads for them, the lavish mausoleums they build for themselves (knowing it seems what their line work inevitably leads to). Some of the most shocking revelations though are the levels of corruption we see in Mexico that make this bloody ecosystem of open street warfare possible. Cops routinely end up dead often because it turns out they are Cartel enforcers themselves. Corrupt politicians aid the gangs however they can while honest politicians are assassinated in broad daylight. Despite the monumental efforts of American agencies like the DEA their task seems almost pointless. Which lead to a question I had when I first got this; what does America have to do with it? Grillo seems to answer, a lot. To put it bluntly the economy that helps the Cartels stay afloat and profitable is this; Mexican marijuana and heroin go north, American dollars and guns go south.Since this book was released Grillo seemed to be correct in that legalization would effect the bottomline of the Cartels. Since US states like Colorado have legalized recreational use of it, which is a growing trend in American politics, the Cartels have taken a massive hit in their profit margins. Still though the war rages. Despite the dramatic "Zero Dark Thirty"-esque capture of El Chapo Guzman the Sinaloa gangs continue to thrive. With the assassination of Javier Valdez and the kidnapping of student protesters; its apparent the Cartels are still very much alive. If you'd like to get a better understanding of the Mexican Drug War, I recommend picking up El Narco.

El Narco is a gripping history of the Mexican drug cartels. Grillo is an experts on the drug cartels and their history. Although Grillo is British he seems to have spent much of his life covering the cartels. A Mexican writer who penned such an exhaustive history would probably have been killed. Perhaps because Grillo writes in english, he has not been targeted. In the United States we have a number of euphemistic wars. We have wars on poverty and cancer. President Richard Nixon was the first to proclaim the war on some drugs. In Mexico the drug war is not a euphemism. Tens of thousands of people have died in Mexico as a result of the drug cartels, many of them killed in horrible ways.Years ago, when the Mexican PRI political party was still solidly in control of Mexico, I traveled in Mexico on several occasions. I have also known many Mexican people in the United States. The Mexican culture and people are not a culture that I would think of as being capable of extreme barbarity. Yet El Narco is a story of the extreme barbarity that has warped Mexican society. The barbaric acts that the Islamic State has become infamous for, beheading, mass execution and exploitation of women, may have been pioneered by the drug cartels.El Narco is an account of a failed state that is unable to resist the drug cartels. El Narco is a story of the complete corruption of the Mexican state, on a Federal level and, especially, on a local level.Mexicans sometimes lay the blame for the drug war on the United States, which is the source of the vast amounts of money that flow into the drug cartels, corrupting Mexican society. There is obvious truth in this assertion. But this river of illegal money does not necessarily lead to the mass barbarism of the drug cartels. Grillo recounts that tens of thousands of South American migrants have been kidnapped and held for ransoms of $1000 or so. The fate of some of those kidnapped have been mass graves. The river of illegal money does not necessarily lead to thousands of torture killings. As Grillo points out, cultures are unique. Mexico is not the same as Columbia. The barbarity and corruption of the cartel insurgency in Mexico cannot be entirely blamed on external forces. There was a time when the Mexican government made sure that serious crime did not impact the tourist areas. Those days are over. Gun battles have taken place in ll of the major tourist areas, either between the drug cartels or between a cartel and the Federal government. Scaring away tourists may not matter much to the Mexican economy anymore since the flow of money from drugs is larger than tourism. The Mexican government also seems to be powerless to do anything about the violence. I visited Ensenada last year. I will never step foot in Mexico again. When I was traveling through Ensenada the tour guide pointed to a seaside housing development. She said that the houses cost hundreds of thousands of dollars and many belonged to Americans. Buying expensive real estate in a compromised state like Mexico seems to be either an act of ignorance of denial ("the drug war will not affect me").The narco insurgency (as Grillo describes it) is easy to ignore since on the surface Mexico seems like a functional second world country. Stores sell international brands like Samsung and people go about their day to day lives. Until the narco insurgency reaches out and touches your life.Grillo writes about the narco cartels branching out from narcotics into kidnapping and protection. In the cities where the cartels are active, according to Grillo, businesses are forced to pay a "tax" to the cartels. The thought experiment that I suggest for a North American who has or is thinking about buying real estate in Mexico is this: If someone comes to you and tells you that you will be paying a monthly "mordida", what recourse do you have other than paying? Going to the police will probably be ineffective since they may be working for the people shaking you down.An even worse scenario could be that you or someone in your family is kidnapped. Grillo has terrifying and tragic accounts of Mexican families who have had a family member kidnapped. Being an North American is does not immunize you crimes like this. The Mexican government bitterly objects to the characterization of Mexico as a failed state. While Mexico will probably never reach the level of failure that Somalia has, the rule of law, which is the foundation of a functioning state, has failed in the Mexico described by Ioan Grillo. The United States and Mexican governments do manage to capture or kill drug lords. What El Narco makes clear is that as each drug lord is taken out, a new one takes their place. As the South American cocaine producers and the Mexican Narcos have become more efficient, the cost of drugs had dropped. The billions that the United States DEA spends combating drugs has had no effect in the decades since President Nixon first declared the start of the War on Drugs. El Narco is not only a history of violence but a history of massive policy failure. At the end of El Narco Ioan Grillo writes that the only thing that has succeeded in reducing the money that the cartels take in is the legalization and decriminalization of Marijuana. Medical Marijuana is available in a number of states and several states of legalized it. As this has happened, the market for smuggled Marijuana has started to dry up.Ioan Grillo's book El Narco is well worth reading. For those who would prefer an accurate fictional account, I highly recommend Don Winslow's books The Power of the Dog and its sequel The Cartel. Don Winslow's book so closely follow the events recounted in El Narco that they could be labeled historical fiction.

I first read smoky when I was in my early 20's. I had a first edition paperback that a housemate stole from me. And I have spent years and years looking for another copy. Every bookstore tried to tell me the book didn't exist. But when I was up in Montana, i found another book by will James, and that publisher had it listed as available from them. So I looked it up under used books, and bought myself a new copy.SMOKY THE COW HORSE has always been one of my all time favorites.

Smoky: The Cow Horse was one of my favorite books as a child. this is the original edition that a sibling stole and tossed - - and now in my sixties it was a treat to receive this again with the cover and inside photos I loved for so many years. It was great to re-read this treasure!

I first read this book as a young teen who was madly stricken with "horse fever"...I loved it then and I find the nostalgia that it brings refreshing. The illustrations are fantastic. This man, Will James, knew horses, well. He knew their behavior and their anatomy.

Written by a cowboy. The horse was as important as a car today. Will Rogers said Will James book offers in a accurate account of the role the horse played in the success and/ survival of a cowboy. One of my all time favorite books.

Completely enjoyed this book. Draw'ns in the book come up real small on this Kindle, but that dosen't take away from the story at all. Recommend this book to all, young and old alike.

Excellent service and an old favorite book I loved as a very young person. It is good to re-read a much-loved book from my past. It is in good condition and arrived in an appropriate time frame.

A great book on the life of a cowhorse. The good, bad and the ugly. A very touching story to the end. A great book for adolescence.

I read this book when I was a 10 year old boy, and it was a superb book. We bought the book for our nine year old granddaughter who is very much into horses, riding, and competition. She loves the story.

Narrative and Numbers: The Value of Stories in Business (Columbia Business School Publishing), by Aswath Damodaran

Review

Damodaran's success in combining storytelling with traditional financial analysis and valuation is unprecedented. The book has the potential to be a cornerstone of both traditional valuation and business "pitching" as it shows how individuals from each world can benefit from co-opting tools from the other. The author takes us on his personal journey into the realization that numbers need a narrative in order to make them persuasive. (Paul Johnson, Nicusa Investment Advisors)Professor Damodaran's point-counterpoint case studies make valuation a good read. Self-critical in his contemporary examples, he wisely cautions the reader that quality valuation requires both the right and the left side of one's brain―the number cruncher and the storyteller. (Thomas E. Copeland, University of San Diego)Damodaran, instructor to many on valuation, clearly demonstrates that quantitative valuation formulas are not sufficient: they must be applied with a more qualitative narrative about the business. But qualitative analysis has its dangers, not the least that we insert our own biases into the narrative. Damodaran nicely weaves stories into the more formal quantitative analysis, with check and balances that yield a more confident valuation. (Stephen Penman, author, Accounting for Value)No one has contributed more to the craft of valuation than Aswath Damodaran. In Narrative and Numbers, he correctly shows that you can't understand the stock without the story. After Damodaran's eye-opening tour, you will forever appreciate the vital contribution of human nature to number-crunching. (Michael Mauboussin, Head of Global Financial Strategies, Credit Suisse)Damodaran takes us to the place where Joseph Campbell, Warren Buffett, and the best quantitative analyses of Nassim Taleb intersect, and his journey uncovers new value and risk missed by analysts who bias themselves by relying solely on storytelling or number-crunching. It's a hero's journey best supported by humility―and this first-person account of Aswath's own evolving narratives, analyses, and valuations of Alibaba, Amazon, Uber, Theranos, Ferrari, and more. He may have started as a quant, but Damodaran's now one of the most balanced analysts―and wonderful business and financial storytellers―writing and teaching today. (David Foster, CEO, Business Valuation Resources)Read Narrative and Numbers if: You’re even the slightest but curious about adding a little storytelling to your number crunching the next time you research an investment. This book provides a great framework for avoiding "garbage-in, garbage-out" when approaching the valuation of a business. Professor Damodaran hits on the key points, but does leave the reader with some work to do in terms of implementation. The included examples are indeed helpful, but referring to his website helps to fill in the gaps between idea and practice.I think this book will be particularly helpful for one 'dark side' of the valuation game - trying to close in on the possible value for a startup or early-stage business tackling a potentially new market. The iterative process of revisiting key inputs (the fewer the better) is also emphasized, something which is a helpful thought exercise to evaluate a change in a company's story/narrative and what that means to the value of the business.

A very good book indeed. Perhaps there is no better book for anyone wanting to learn or perfect their skills as a financial analyst. Damodaran is an apostle of the DCF method for valuing companies and stocks, and shuns P/Es and other relative valuations. The book is excellent at describing the process from A to Z of understanding a company and framing a numerical analysis within a comprehensive story of what the company is and where it is headed. The author provides many and very good examples of how to approach this, and offers a very good framework for understanding most types of company: start-ups, mature companies, cos. in the commodity industry. The only ones he does not include are banks, which he covers in other books. He explains how to create a narrative around a company, and also provides detailed examples of how to go about the numerical analysis of cash-flows correctly and avoid unrealistic or implausible scenarios.

Really connects the story to the numbers. Outstanding review of how to test the story!Would recommend to anyone serious about understanding valuation.

The procedure of valuing a stock through is rather simple once it has been learnt. And when looking in retrospect on why old valuations turn out to be incorrect it is rarely due to getting the mechanics of the valuation tool wrong. Instead it is almost always because the sales or profits turned out very differently from what was forecasted since the company, its strategy or business environment developed in an unanticipated way – the narrative was wrong. This is a book on how to combine the numbers of the valuation tools with a narrative that brings life, understanding and, by this, increased precision into the valuation made. The author is a well-known finance professor at NYU who has written a large number of finance books. As I understand it the book started with the author posting and updating the narratives and subsequent valuations for a number of stocks like Uber, Amazon, Apple, Alibaba etc. online. They now feature as case studies throughout the book. Taking a step back, Narrative and Numbers is also a personal journey for Damodaran as he over time has developed from a pure number cruncher to taking a more holistic approach. I find that when a reader is invited to share an author’s personal development the result is often very likable. This book is no exception and it is evident that the author has enjoyed writing it.The structure of the text is very, well… structured. Damodaran tells you that he will combine narratives and numbers, he describes the basics of one of those, then he describes the basics of the other one, he merges them and finally discusses the consequences. The author who describes himself as a “teacher first” gives us short but thorough accounts of the two components before merging them into a greater whole. And to clarify, the narrative referred to in this book is the fundamental story of long-term value creation drivers for the company, not the flimsy, often biased and constantly shifting stories that always surround listed companies on the stock exchange. All the way through the book we get to follow the described process through the case studies and there are further several illuminating pictures giving good oversights of the reasoning. The advocated valuation process is to:1. develop a narrative for the business,2. test the narrative to see if it is possible, plausible and probable,3. convert the narrative into drivers of value,4. connect the drivers of value to a valuation and5. keep the feedback loop open.Interestingly the author calculates one value of the company as a going concern and one liquidation value and then estimates the probabilities of each life-or-death scenario. I very much appreciate the 3P test in stage 2 and the openness for change in stage 5 importantly tries to ensure that the narratives are reasonable and don’t becomes stale and outdated in the light of changes. Damodaran’s arguing for the importance of having enough humility to alter ones opinion brings to mind similar arguments from George Soros. My main caveat is that the process doesn’t explicitly enough ensure a combination of an inside view and an outside view when developing the story. When forming a narrative it is very easy to focus on the uniqueness and thrill of the situation at hand and extrapolate from the recent history. Often this leads to too high expectations and bottom-up sell side analyst estimates are partly due to this almost always too optimistic. The outside view treats the situation statistically and takes into account the outcome of many similar historical situations. In business where success is governed by both skill and luck both viewpoints have merit. To make good forecasts narratives must meet numbers. Without the verbal structuring of the fundamental business story of a company it isn’t even possible to understand the numbers to start with. Damodaran shows that good decisions benefit from several points of view such as the numerical and the verbal and I fully agree. This is a review by investingbythebooks.com

Must read for any Valuation Analyst.

Prior to 'Narrative and Numbers', I had the pleasure of being able to read 'Investment Valuation', 'The Little Book of Valuation', and 'The Dark Side of Valuation'.This book will not teach you how to be a better storyteller or a mathematician, but it will point you in the right direction. 'Narrative and Numbers' will help everyone to balance their brain hemispheres, and in my view, this is Prof. Damodaran's magnum opus.

Very good marriage between Stories and Numbers. Elaborates why Valuation craft has to do as much with storytelling as with models and numbers.

There's nothing absolutely revolutionary in this book. But this an accessible book which reiterates fundamental principles of valuation and investing.

Full of color images, this guide provides good overall info about Caribbean port towns. Maps are also in color and include a detail inset of the port town. Numbers on the map direct you to detailed descriptions of sites or places like hotels or restaurants they recommend. There is a large removable map of the Caribbean at the back. Side bars describe typical recommended shore excursions. This guide is perfect before you've decided which islands you want to see while cruising or for several days.

We went on a Cruise to the Caribbean in January 2017. This was so very helpful. We didn't do many excursions from the ship and found out that we could do so many things on our own, or hire a cab to take us to the places we wanted to go. So much GREAT information in this book.

Excellent book with valuable information about the Caribbean and various ports of call. Even after 13 Caribbean cruises, I found it most helpful and comprehensive.

Disappointed. Vipond seems to want to direct cruise passengers to all the usual, commercial spots. We prefer to find the hidden treasures on each Island,.

As thorough a guide as you will find anywhere. easily the best tour book I've read on the Caribbean. I highly recommend this book

Taking a ten day cruise and this a great book that covers all the Caribbean ports. I like that she includes information about what's in the area where the ship docks.

Fun and informative book, can’t wait for my cruise in Feb!

Great background and history for island stops and yet very accurate current info! Good book to have in preparation for the cruise and to bring with you!

A "must-read" for anyone preaching or giving feedback to those who do. The importance of understanding the needs, culture, life etc. of the congregation you are speaking to is well presented. Also included are tips to evaluate and tailor your sermon or homily to reduce communication barriers. Written in a style easily read and understood. Good for reference when reflecting on what contributed to a sermon's success or failure.

Great book to teach contextualizing the sermon. Well researched and well written. Every pastor should read this book and regularly too.

Nora is a wonderful, caring individual. It comes across in her works.

great resource

Enjoyed this book.

good read.

did not find this book helpful. Most preachers know to create sermons with their hearers in mind.

Tisdale explores an interesting activity for preachers that is what she calls exegeting the congregation. The author highlights the significant need for preachers to understand the culture, demographics, theological background and expectations of the congregation to whom they minister. Tisdale provides many different approaches for how to gain insights about the congregation that will enhance the positive impact of the preaching. I think there is a plethora of elements for readers to consider and evaluate for their own ministry of preaching.Tisdale considers preachers to be local theologians. She writes, "Congregational preachers are also local theologians, called to craft theology that is shaped for very particular communities of faith...preaching as local theology insists that we begin with a searching examination of our own culture."Exegeting the culture, according to Tisdale, complements Biblical exegesis and helps the pastor - parish relationship. The impact of cultural difference is severe in some cases and probably exaggerated in others. Where Tisdale seems deficient is in two areas in my opinion. One is that I think she neglects the responsibility of Christians congregations to act like Christians rather than often being snide, impatient judges of preachers. I think she could have written about how congregations are not sitting as judge and jury of preachers but as recipients of the gospel and word of Christ. Too often, authors seem to imply that finger pointing is allowed if pastors don't measure up to arbitrary expectations like being culturally sensitive and acclimated and amenable to all of the congregations' expectations. The second area that I think Tisdale neglects is when the preacher is called to prophetically confront the culture of the congregation that is opposition to what God is doing. For example, a parish may be steeped in patriotism and expect the pastor to preach Americanism along with the gospel. This would include inserting all American holidays into the liturgical calendar. The preacher may be aware of this and consider it something to be confronted rather than adopted and adhered to. Mixing political action and agendas with the mission of God may be another expectation of a parish culture. Tisdale doesn't write about confronting such cultural DNA. I think that would have been helpful. Sometimes the congregation is wrong and the preacher is called to confront them and the culture.I did not find the concluding chapter of the book on preaching as folk art very helpful. That seems less substantial or clear than previous topics of the book.Overall this is an interesting book that is worthwhile for preachers to consider.
