As a child my son enjoyed this book for years! We would read it and he would immediately go outside and start digging. We reserved a corner of the yard just for his digging where he and various neighbor friends would dig for oil, water, dinosaur bones (planting chicken bones into the dirt). At one point the hole was nearly 3 feet deep and was made into a prehistoric "mud hole" or filled with rocks as their imaginations led them deeper and deeper into the earth. That all educational books should so ignite an excitement for learning and discovery. I'm waiting anxiously for this book to arrive and can hardly wait to see the creative excitement in my 5 year old grandson and his sister. I wish I could find another favorite book about a pine tree seed that fell into a small crack of a barren rock and how the tree took root, spread the crack, which caught more dirt and water, spread the crack further, etc. That was another well-worn library book that absolutely fascinated the kids and ME!

I purchased this book because it was a required reading for my son's second grade summer reading list. He was able to read the book with little difficulty. I helped him with a few words. All of my children, ages 1 to 7 enjoyed the book. It was in good condition. There were no rips or tears or missing pages. The story is very enjoyable and is different from the Balto movie. I recommend this to other parents looking for a book for their child.

This is simply the coolest kids book around! So imaginitive, and the drawings are phenomenal! If you've got a budding young earth scientist at home, do yourself a favor and buy this book now.

Since we read this, my boys have been trying to dig a hole to the other side of the earth. The hole takes up a large section of our garden and is getting a bit deep.

I came to this by looking for more McNulty titles after enjoying the more recent 'If you decide to go to the moon' which I also reviewed. This copy is second-hand and I have no way of playing the accompanying audio tape! The story is not dated - I'm sure 'Journey to the centre of the Earth' will not date. This is intended for, I think, 5 -8ish year olds, but my 3-year old loves it, despite having no concept of time, distance, temperature, pressure, the sheer impossibility of digging a hole that deep (and narrow!), or many of the other concepts (quick visits to Google Video or similar help to explain 'geyser', 'lava', 'volcano' etc). A children's book adults will enjoy re-reading.

I loved this book as a kid. I bought it to read to my 3 year old daughter. She was asking questions about the pictures and it held her attention. She really enjoyed it -- she says she's going to "dig a hole to the fire" in her grandparent's yard.

I've used this book for years to introduce first graders to the concept of the earth having layers. The illustrations in the book are very helpful for showing students what the earth would look like if we could cut into the middle of it. The imaginative story makes a complicated subject matter interesting & approachable for young students. I highly recommend this book for elementary students.

Love this book. I read it to my 2nd graders every year during our study on the layers of the Earth, and it's been a hit every time. The illustrations are awesome and the many details are in kid-friendly language.

While I have been trained to work with autistic children, I had never encountered such a thorough account of the first years of the life and uneven development of an autistic child. Clara Claiborne Park is an amazing observer, author, mother, and scientist in the way she analyzes the language problems and thinks of ways to work with them. This book should be read by any mother and father and professional dealing with an infant and preschooler who is not developing as 'normal'; those who have autistic children will recognize the behaviors and those who children are not autistic will be given a lot to observe and decide that that is not the direction of a non-autistic child. Either way, this book should be a helpful guide!

I enjoyed reading this book and received it in a timely manner. However, someone folded the front cover page or placed it in the package so hastily that it was bent backwards near the top of it (the front cover) when I received the item in the mail.

No wonder some friend stole this one. A woman you'd like to have as a near neighbour, telling the story of the first eight years of the bringing-up of an autistic daughter, her youngest child. Of the slow realisation, between when she was about eight months old and when she was two, that there was something different and far wrong, something missing: not intelligence, not the usual senses: call it a willingness to let the senses in. Of the years of unrelenting struggle to get this child to latch onto the world around her, to interact with people, to speak: years of a siege - and there were three other children needing love as well, and people who helped and people who did NOT ... I just had to get another copy.

This book, the story of one family’s attempt to break through what seems to them to be their child’s utter indifference to them, is remarkable both for the mother’s story of her own efforts to engage her child and for her account of her attempts to get help from a community of professionals who seem as baffled as she is by her child’s behavior. Her progress with her daughter is very slow.. Elly ( the pseudonym for Jessica Park) makes progress at her own pace and she notices and responds to what interests her. She is very attentive to some details ( and has become a remarkable artist) but she is rarely attentive to people. I sometimes got impatient with the narrative but I think that was more indicative of my need for Elly to make more rapid and remarkable progress than it was of any flaw in the prose. Clara Claiborne Park raised Elly during the era when the supposed etiology of autism was “the refrigerator mother,” a parent who did not want her child and whose demeanor conveyed this to the developing infant. (See Bruno Bettleheim’s “Joey the Mechanical Boy” for the full explanation of this most damaging of theories). Her discomfort at being judged for unnamed flaws is poignantly expressed: “Comfortable, well-educated members of the upper middle class ordinarily escape the experience of depersonalization, of utter helplessness in institutional hands, of reduction to the status of children to whom situations are mediated, not explained. Like so much that hurts, the experience is deeply educational. . We know now in our skins that the most threatening of all attacks is the attack on the sense of personal worth, that the harshest of all deprivations is the deprivation of respect. We know now, I think, how the slum mother feels as the welfare worker comes round the corner. It takes, one would think, so little knowledge of psychology to put oneself in another person's place.” Attitudes toward autism and its etiology have changed dramatically, but this memoir, originally written in the 1960s is still well worth reading

The Seige is fairly dated now; autism study has come a long way since then. It is more a case study than a memoir, and sometimes the amount of details gets a bit much. But it is certainly a landmark, and well worth taking a look at. For what it's worth, the last few sentences of the book are the wisest comment on why we are here in this veil of tears that I have ever encountered.

Wow, having worked with autistic children for many years, this is the first account that shows how the autistic child exists in a family.

A must read for every parent of a child with autism! Superbly written with incredible insight only a devoted mother could offer. Don't be put off because it was written in the early 60's, this is a classic in the autism world!

Amazing story during a time where autism was not well know or talked about

I was looking for a birthday gift for my husband. He loves to try different rums especially when we travel. This book gives so much valuable information about different types of rum. It also provides a detailed history of rum. Pretty awesome gift for the rum lover in your life. Highly recommended.

i liked how through the book was and how much info i was able to learn.I dont see many good books on the overall subject of rum.i like the feel of the book too.

Informative book and fun to read.

Grand book with tns of rum information

Absolutely fantastic! I learned so much from the history and the close discussion of all the rum brands, plus fantastic cocktail recipes. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

I enjoyed reading this very interesting book. The only reason I give it 4 stars rather than 5 is that inadequately addresses aged rum as a sipping drink. I will not mix a fine 12 or 15 YO rum with coca cola (sacrilege). Ratings should have included a neat category not just with mixers. Not up to par with a Michael Jackson malt whisky books in that I would have liked to have read the author's comments on (comparison of) different bottlings from each producers. Nevertheless, a well done and informative book.

I like the writing style and the reviews of various rum brands.

I'm clearly in the minority here, but I thought this book was just okay. The large format is terrific, and there are some good essays, but the photographs are often so dark you can't see the details of the clothing. I also feel they gave the designers after Dior short shrift (I'm still waiting for a book with good coverage/photos of the Galliano years). Also, I was hoping this book would cover the big Dior exhibit but it really didn't, even though I believe it was associated with the exhibit. For me, the gold standard Dior book is still Christian Dior by Richard Martin and Harold Koda. It only covers the years Dior was in charge but the photos are gorgeous. Sad to say I returned this book.

Everyone in the fashion world talked about going to Paris to see the show, I could not go, but wanted to see what the " Absolutely Fantastic Show" was about, so I got the book. It is superb, and one of the best book written on the House od Dior, it includes creations from Christian Dior himself, Yves St. Laurent, Gianfranco Ferre, to everyone who has designed for Dior. To date, this is defenitely one of the best Dior books I have bought.

I bought this for my sister, and I'm glad. This particular version focuses on the beauty of the clothes up-close, usually without models. One of the other recent versions published mainly showed off-runway models backstage being fitted, and we really wanted to gasp at the beautiful dresses alone. This one is more "art" and less history.

I saw this exhibit in Paris and the book is a way to keep that research at hand for my work and for my students. It is gorgeous and informative.

Gorgeous! Bought as a gift and came in perfect condition!!

Fantastic book!

I enjoyed this book prior to my trip to Paris to view the exhibition. However, I would have preferred the test to be a couple of fonts larger.Very nice book.

Love the book but the black lettering on the gray binding is coming off so it looks bad now without proper title. Maybe this one is defective. Hoping to exchange for a new one.
