The 4-volume World Atlas of the Past has also 256 pages (64 per volume), but only 52 double-spread maps (13 per volume); each accompanied by a spread of text with an irrelevant big landscape photo. Atlas of World History ("AWH") also by John Haywood comprises 6 parts titled Historical Atlas of... with a 4-page introduction & 28 double-spread maps each (152 maps/180 spreads/360 pages in total), acknowledgments & index. After the 1st publishing in 1997 by Sharpe, as a 3-volume set (ISBN 1563248549), AWH was reprinted not only in full in one 384-page volume by Weidenfeld as Cassell's Atlas (ISBN 030435757X), which can be seen inside at Amazon UK, but also abbreviated in 1 shorter volume with only 121 double-spread maps in color on 256 pages by Barnes & Noble (ISBN: 0760706875) & MetroBooks (ISBN: 1586630997), as well as in full in separate 1-/2-part & 96-/192-page volumes including encyclopedic dictionaries on 16 spreads numbered 29 to 44 (32 pages) per part. O'Brien's (Oxford/Philips) Atlas (ISBN 0195215672 can be seen inside) would seem superior to AWH, if not for the disqualifying incompetence of rendering Poland reformed & not Catholic; so O'Brien cannot be trusted. AWH has far fewer maps than Hammond's reprint of acclaimed Times Atlas of World History. AWH uses a uniform map style throughout and conveys each theme in a single map, while Times tends to use a greater variety of smaller maps. For example, where AWH has one map representing the Byzantine Empire from 610 to 1204, Times has five. This simpler approach may make the AWH more accessible for younger readers. AWH is suitable for collections aimed at junior-high-school students and up.

The "Atlas of Past Times" found a permanent place on my coffee table. This book is absolutely loaded with illustrative maps, photos, and text. John Haywood has done to the pictorial record of world history what Kenneth C. Davis did for American history in his "Don't Know Much About History."Time after time over the years I've heard or read about a particular civilization, war, political upheaval, or religious movement, but was unclear as to the specific timeframe and geographic scope. It's one thing to read about boundaries in text, but Haywood lays it all out in numerous maps. Each map is color-coded and loaded with useful information. The legends are clear and concise. A perfect example of how I found the book useful was in my following the war in Iraq. I didn't want to read six textbooks to gain a better understanding of the region's history. Haywood's book provides a fantastic visual overview: Mesopotamia, the Assyrians, the Babylonians, the Jews, the Arabs, the advance and subdivisions of Islam, the Kurds, the Turks, etc. The area has a long and convoluted history, which the maps really help place within grasp of the common man.The accompanying text is only a cursory--but well written--examination of chronological world history, which is fine; it is titled and pitched as an "Atlas," and therein lies its strength and attraction. I will refer to this book again and again. --Christopher Bonn Jonnes, author of BIG ICE

This review is for the whole series. I'm using these books with students who need vocabulary work. It is helping them across the board. For example, one student, who is working on book A, just finished the first two sections of the book, which contain words about numbers of things (mono/uni = 1, bi/di = 2, tri=3 and so on). Yesterday, she and I looked at her math class work. They're learning about polynomials. Her vocabulary list contains words such as monomial, binomial, trinomial... and she exclaimed, with joy, "I know these! We just learned these! The rest of the class took the whole period with this and still didn't get it and I did." She's lagged in vocabulary for so long, it's a delight to see her surging ahead. I would use the numbered books with students in middle school and needier high school students, and the A and above with average students in high school. More advanced high school students would zoom through the first few and then find material that will help them. Great for general vocab and SAT prep.

I know this book is meant for older kids but, it's so well laid out and easy to understand that my six year old son just completed book 4 and loved it. Now every time he hears a root word, suffix or prefix that he recognized he gets so excited. The lessons are so short and concise that we discuss one lesson at each dinner time. Then he takes the unit review quiz at the end of the week and always aces it not because he is super smart but because the lessons focus on understanding not memorization. If you're interested in improving vocabulary skills, The Classical Roots books are great for any age. I bought books 4-6 and A-E and plan to work with my sons through the whole series.

This curricula is easy to use, designed for students to work independently with little teacher intervention, and it gives students a chance to not only learn vocabulary which they may need to know for college entrance tests, but also it's fun to see where all the words we say emanated (e.g. Latin, Greek, etc.). For students or "wordsmiths" this curricula requires about 15 minutes a day and is a painless way to teach vocabulary roots necessary to decipher unknown words in the future as well as improve your vocabulary.

I LOVE this series! These books have help build an incredible foundation for my son. He started with the first book and is now in the high school level. These books are a wonderful addition to a classical language education.

As an adult, I enjoy these vocabulary books just to keep my mind sharp as I am aging. I particularly like that they have a Latin Roots approach.

My daughter 14, loves to learn new words and this book really covered what I had been looking for, the origin and roots along with synonyms. We don"t need spend a lot of time on vocabulary because the book covers the word descriptions in such a manner that its easier for her to remember.

My oldest daughter loves them and my boys even think they're "not too bad." The kids work on them about 15 minutes a day. They've helped their spelling and knowledge of root words, and root origins.

Love this whole series.

This is a must read book. Most people really do not understand how hard it is to keep their money safe. Many of the threats to money are almost invisible, nibbling here and there. But by the magic of compounding, these "tiny" nibbles can cut your money in half over time. e.g., a 2% inflation (what the Fed calls "no inflation") will cut your money in half in 36 years. So if you're 50 and live to be 86, you will live your last year on half the money you have now. Just a tiny 1% increase in the sales tax? Over time, it will impoverish you if your money doesn't grow more than 1%.Loeb travelled the world as part of his investment business. He saw everything-- earthquakes, wars, revolutions, ravening inflations. People fleeing with all they could rescue of their lifetime savings on their backs. This led him to a great insight: There is no way to keep money safe from all the threats to it. The only way to keep your money "safe" is to grow it faster than it is nibbled away. So this book is about how to grow your money. This book was first written a long time ago, but the lessons are still important. These are things most people don't know and most investment books don't cover. In fact, a lot of the standard investment advice-- the kind a "financial advisor" will be swarming you with-- will not grow your money and will not keep it safe from all the tiny, invisible erosions. Please, read this book and think it all thru again. Do you really want to have all your money in a residence and rental property in earthquake and tornado country the way one hard saver I know does? Do you want to have 5 typed pages of load mutual funds to be properly "diversified" the way my sister did when she died? Do you want to keep your money "safe" in bonds now that you're retired the way my doctor is being advised to do? Do you really want to vote for that sales tax increase that's "only" 1% the way my aunt did?

The Battle for Investment Survival is referenced in The Zurich Axioms, an excellent book I read earlier. As such I was curious to read it. This is a second edition of this book that was published in 1957. I don't know when the first edition was written. The author is a 35 years, seasoned, stock broker who lays out his experience and advice in this book. It is broken down to 96 short chapters, followed by (in the second edition) notes and lectures that the author made after writing this book. I liked it for the useful and interesting information, some of it contrary to main stream investment status quo. I felt at times that some of it could be cut a little shorter to convey the same idea. I, personally, had somewhat of a hard time with the language or writing style of the author. It might be the style of writing at the time or just his own style, I don't know which. He is using long run-on sentences that are becoming hard to follow sometimes. Also, the use of terms in ways that are not used in present day, had me stop and re-read and think before I could continue. All on its own it is not a bad thing except for slowing me down. I don't feel that this book taught me anything ground breaking but I'm very pleased for having read it. Some of my favorite quotes:"There is no line of endeavor in the world where real knowledge will pay as rich or as quick a monetary reward as Wall Street.""There are three ways of making money. One is to sell your time. The second is to lend your money. The third is to risk your money."And my favorite of them all:"people who invest money for others have legal and moral responsibilities which often hinder the use of investment practices most likely to succeed."

This is a book that will increase your understanding of the world of money and what you have to do to protect your future. Loeb travelled all over the world and saw *everything*-- war, revolution, economic collapse, earthquakes, inflation, starvation, people losing everything, fleeing for their lives. He also lived a long time and saw many changes in US laws and taxation. His basic point is that money is never safe. Never. You think you can keep it safe in a bank, or under a mattress, or in government bonds, but even when it is not being outright confiscated or stolen, the purchasing power it is supposed to preserve is being constantly chipped away by inflation, taxation, regulation. In his view, the only way to keep money safe is to invest it in a way that will return enough to make up for what is eroded and chipped away. Liquidity matters. Don't have it all in one location-- i.e. don't have a lot in real estate in the same location you have your business in. e.g. California before the real estate bust and economic crash.I happen to believe his investment style is correct: don't invest it all, be very selective about your buys, have only a few A+ ideas, and watch them carefully. When opportunity presents, go after it 100%. Keep losses small. But even if you don't agree with everything Loeb says, this book is full of investment *wisdom*, and it will increase your wisdom enough so you will recognize and avoid the "advisor" who comes at you slinging jargon and investment "facts" hoping to fool you into thinking he knows anything.

I recently downloaded "The Battle for Investment Survival" into Kindle.I had first read this book at an Army post in 1969.I read it and reread it many times to get the major points by G.M Loeb.It opened my eyes to the most common sense, intelligent adviceabout the stock market that has followed me through today.to quote the book:"It is absolutely futile to get results except to buying into anticipatedlarge gains. It is far better to let cash set idle than to invest just tokeep invested or for income. It fact it is really vital ........ one of thewidest differences between the successful professional and theloss taking amateur."I believe this book offers the best investment advice a 72 year oldhas ever read.
