About the Author

William K. Kershner (1930 - 2007) began flying in 1945 at the age of fifteen, washing and propping airplanes to earn flying time. By this method he obtained the private, then the commercial and flight instructor certificates, becoming a flight instructor at nineteen. He spent four years as a naval aviator, most of the time as a pilot in a night fighter squadron, both shore and carrier based. He flew nearly three years as a corporation pilot and for four years worked for Piper Aircraft Corporation, demonstrating airplanes to the military, doing experimental flight-testing, and acting as special assistant to William T. Piper, Sr., president of the company. Bill Kershner held a degree in technical journalism from Iowa State University. While at the university he took courses in aerodynamics, performance, and stability and control. He held the airline transport pilot, commercial, and flight and ground instructor certificates and flew airplanes ranging from 40-hp Cubs to jet fighters. He is the author (and illustrator) of The Student Pilot’s Flight Manual, The Instrument Flight Manual, The Advanced Pilot’s Flight Manual, The Flight Instructor’s Manual, The Basic Aerobatic Manual, and Logging Flight Time.The Kershner Flight Manual Series has influenced hundreds of thousands of pilots, with over 1.3 million copies printed in at least 3 languages. After doing his first spin at the age of 16 in an Aeronca TAC, Kershner flew and taught aerobatics for 60 years and operated a one-airplane, one-instructor aerobatics school in Sewanee, Tennessee using a Cessna 152 Aerobat. He received the General Aviation Flight Instructor of the Year Award, 1992, at the state, regional and national levels. The Ninety-Nines awarded him the 1994 Award of Merit. In 1998 he was inducted into the Flight Instructor Hall of Fame and in 2002 was among the first to be inducted into the Tennessee Aviation Hall of Fame. In 2007 he was inducted into the International Aerobatic Club Hall of Fame; to date he is only person inducted into both the International Aerobatic Club Hall of Fame and the Flight Instructor’s Hall of Fame.

First, I absolutely love all of William Kershner's flying textbooks. When flying was just a distant dream to me, I bought a copy of "The Student Pilot's Flight Manual" - it was the first flying textbook I owned, and it made everything so clear, even before I had a single hour at the controls. Same for all of the other Kershner books - I've read and benefitted from them all, and even as I've earned all sorts of ratings, I still refer back to some of his books now and then.Fast forward many years, and although I'm not really interested in a career as a CFI (I don't think I'd have enough students to stay current), I am interested in giving something back to the aviation community by teaching ground school, so I'm considering going for an AGI (Advanced Ground Instructor) certificate. Naturally, I picked up Kershner's book, and for the most part, I've found it just as helpful as his other texts.My only gripe is that, like many of the other books out there, Kershner promotes an integrated approach that mixes ground and flight together. This is probably exactly the right thing for someone on a CFI path, but for someone like me pursuing the AGI, this means there's a lot of material that just isn't very relevant for me. Sure, I like Kershner's writing style and I'm happy to read every word, but learning to fly from the right seat (for example) just isn't that important to me at this point.Otherwise, I do like the book very much overall, especially the focus on the human factors and attitudes that go into being a good instructor. Indeed, I think back on many of the CFI's I've known over the years, and his suggestions and guidelines exactly define the best of the best that I've known.I'd definitely recommend this book as a great way to get started learning how to give flight instruction.

Similar to the Airplane Flying Handbook but obviously from an instructing point of view. Comprehensive in that it covers FOI, Private, Commercial, Multi, Instrument, and Aerobatics. My only critique is that there are only 17 pages devoted to light twins, over 60 pages on aerobatics, and zero pages on water ops. It would truly be a complete book if seaplane ops were included (after all, he took the time to include substantial aerobatic instruction; surely there's a similar number of floatplane instructors/students). More importantly, I feel the chapters on multi-engine and instrument instruction could be a little more robust. Overall, a nicely written book - easy to read and then create your own outline as to how you will instruct a topic.

The information presented is excellent but the Kindle version does not have a table of contents and the index doesn’t show page numbers for any of the topics. This makes the Kindle version very difficult to navigate. Hopefully this can be fixed. In the meantime I cannot recommend the Kindle version.

I've used many texts over the years, and IMHO no one beats Kershner. He explains things in terms students can understand, a real help to instructors. Those who say his jokes are a bit dated are right, but it adds to the enjoyment of the reading. Like picking up a conversation with an old friend. Highly useful, and highly recommend.

Great book for aspiring flight instructors. There aren't too many books out there on how to be a successful flight instructor and this is a really good one.

Reasonably priced.

This is a necessary book for all Flight Instructors. This is the 'How to" book for how to teach difficult subjects to personswho want to obtain flight licenses and upgrades.

My husband had read this book at the request of his therapist because of the trauma he endured during his childhood. He is male who was raped by his older sister from the age of two until he was thirteen and she married then moved away. She invited her girlfriends to participate as well. My husband was well into retirement before he got help for his nightmares and he wanted to understand why he felt anger so easily. Many parts of Olga's story he related to so I wanted to have a greater understanding myself. Thank you Olga for your courage.

I am so sorry for what u went thru. I had to put this book down so many x. I could not believe someone could do this to their child. My mother mentally touted me. I was the oldest girl in a family of 3 younger brothers. I was accused of everything that went wrong.It was always my fault, my mother took everything out on me. I started nursing school when I was 21. My mother started kicking me out of the house @ 13, I had to fend for myself. I worked,starting @ 13.she wasn't interested in my nursing school n neither were my brothers. I re when I got capped(it was a big show @a church, I had invited her-every time the door opened I looked to see if it was her-it wasn't. My graduation was 12/17/73 she was killed by a drunk driver on 12/16/73 I have no recollection of my graduation. I didn't even feel bad when she died. That's enough. This book brought all that up again after 46 year. It was very cathartic. God Bless You. I loved your book.

In the reading of this book I was horrified and mesmerized at the same time. How could someone possibly survive this inescapable abuse and humiliation year after year. But alas.......it is possible, and the author does a perfectly wonderful job of showing us just how she survived, and in that survival just how complex the human mind can be. Many people do not know about DID except from the movie Sybil. Many people do not accept that forgetting is possible. Olga was so clear and concise on just how her mind handled the overwhelming knowledge of being raped by her father and brothers, over and over. She showed us clearly just how she put things away piece by piece, leaving herself a massive puzzle that would take a great deal of effort and courage to try to resolve at a later day.That book will be with me forever, and is helping me to finally see and face my own puzzle called my life.Thank you Olga for your bravery at exposing something that is so deeply shaming, must of us would rather leave it buried till the day we day.Amazing!

I thought the book was very well written. Her story was so captivating yet painful almost to read. I really think the author did a great job showing how abuse or anything challenging can change people mentally in order for to cope. I think anyone suffering from anything should read her book. I really admire her and she seems very intelligent. I think if abuse was articulated in the way she does it, more often people would not feel afraid to talk about their own issues and these types of things would not be seen as taboo. I honestly feel like she opened up my eyes to a lot of issues in my life. This really was a good read that I stumbled on. She really met her purpose when she said she wanted to enlightened people about her condition. I really also believe making a movie out of this would be a good way to spread the word. Her tale of courage, bravery, sustenance,self belief, and the fact that I can tell she clearly has a special beautiful soul, is not something that only a few people should know about. A story like hers deserves to be shared. I sincerely believe this is the best money I have spent in a long time on something that has changed my life. This story actually penetrated my soul and spoke to my heart. It is a story I am very unlikely to forget. I also think she has great writing skills. I wonder if she ever tried writing fiction? :)

For personal reasons, I started reading this book at Chapter 8. It is truly captivating regardless of your start point. When I was ready, I read the book cover to cover without stopping... and then I read it again.While reading "The Sum of My Parts", Olga Trujillo--at the tender age of three-- immediately became my hero. She endured horrific abuse at the hands of people that should have been trusted family members. This is an amazingly incredible, haunting read and one that I will surely never forget. Her memoir takes the reader from the depths of an emotional pit, one that you think she couldn't possibly survive, and she ends her book with an uplifting and final message of hope. From a healing standpoint, reading this book is quite possibly the best decision I have made.Olga's book details her life of abuse at the hands of her father, brothers and outside perpetrators and chronicles the events to present time. She endured a life of abuse, panic, agoraphobia and consequently DID. Olga has gone on to become an accomplished attorney, advocate and author.I had the absolute pleasure of meeting Olga recently and I can say that I am truly amazed and humbled at the person she has become as a result of abuse of this magnitude.Please, if you are an advocate for childhood abuse, a teacher, a parent or a survivor...this book is a must read. Thank you, Olga, for shedding light on this subject and educating us on DID. You are my hero.

Excellent and captivating. There are many graphic details about the child abuse that she experienced, both physical and sexual. A truly inspiring story of her journey of survival as well as her incredible commitment to healing through therapy. As a person with DID, she experienced it very differently but it's eye opening and would recommend it to those who are survivors of sexual abuse, as well as those who deal with their own DID.

Great instruction for self study.

This among the worst text book ever that I have had to use from which to learn CAD. The author clearly knows a lot about SolidWorks. However, he is not helping his reader to learn SolidWorks in an organized and sensible way.He has very few, long drawn out Chapters, that jumps all over the place between supposedly the main topic of the chapter to various pieces of technical details of SolidWorks. There are 3 main example projects based "instructions" that required more than 499 steps. The poor student would be lost, confused switching back and forth between look at the book's instruction, and the computer screen, all the while getting lost every 2 to 3 pages.The book only has 10 chapters. It would really benefited from having 30 chapters and group the material into different more digestible lumps. The table of contents is 12 pages long, but could be double this length to make it easier to locate thing.As it is, we the students are made to suffer through experiencing one horrendously painful world war in one long, continuous 4 year stretch. I put a lot of the blame on the book's editor, if it has one, and its publisher. The author write more than one of these text book every year, but the contents changed very little from year to year. If you are smart, go to the school book store to check out the book before buying it, or you will be very sorry to have to suffer as I am doing.

This book might work for you if you are new to mechanical drawings and have little to no experience with Solidworks. I was looking for a book to further expanded on the Solidworks online help topics and maybe gives some tips and tricks. I was highly disappointed. All this book does is give step by step by step directions on how to do the most basic things. If you don't know how to make a drawing form part (spoiler alert: click Make Drawing from Part) then maybe you will learn something. If you have any real experience, pass on this one.

Great book. Easy to read and follow. I would highly recommend to any SW user.

My only misgiving about these recordings is that it is a little hard to hear TNH. Still, I give this five stars because the teaching is superb as is the sweet, venerable master delivering it. If you are a fan of Thich Nhat Hanh, you will love this and if you're not familiar with his teachings, he will open your eyes to living authentically, by helping you to bring your inner self in balance with the external world. Certain teachings of his remain with me for days, echoing in my mind long after having listened. It's a little pricey, but worth every penny of you're looking for guidance or reminders on how to live optimally.

The only reason that I did not give this a 5 is because Thich Nhat Hanh's voice is a bit husky on part of the recording, and difficult to hear (for me) with any background noise. The material is fresh and can be apprehended by the Western mind. Humanistic personal psychology and how to create positive changes is presented in a logical, coherent and compassionate manner. He provides examples of principles that virtually all listeners can understand.He presents Buddhist methods for dealing with one's own disturbing emotions that are totally counter to emulating stoicism. His sweet sense of humor pads the corridors of the somewhat scary work of facing and embracing tenderly one's own true feeling, and using methods to transform them to their opposites, to find peace and expansion of consciousness in the process. This is for people who are willing to find out who they are and what they are feeling in order to get the benefit of emotional freedom. I purchased the audio book because it is much easier for me to learn that way than by hitting the books.

I've been able to listen to the first disc only so far, but am captivated by Thich Nhat Hanh's insight and lessons for life. Yes, he speaks quietly and that makes you get quiet and listen--which is one of the points of the path on which he encourages us.

Thich Nhat Hanh has a great insight and philosophy on life and all of its virtues. He's easy to listen to and understand.

I really love Thich Nhat Hanh. I have many other recordings. I did not heed the other reviewers comments because I thought I would be able to understand. Unfortunately, the issue is not his volume or his accent. The issue is an absolutely terrible audio recording.

'18th Century Highlanders' is an examination of the history and uniforms of the Highland Regiments raised in the British Army in the mid-late 18th Century. Though it may not serve as a good introduction to the casual reader, it is useful for someone interested in this topic for some fine details on the uniforms and colors, and also for a list of all the regiments and fencibles that took part in the War of the Austrian Succession, the Seven Years War, the American War, and the Indian War. A section of the book is also dedicated to the regiments' weapons, and the basics of Highland dress.The color plates, by Mike Chapell, are probably some of the best to appear in any of Osprey's titles on the Highlanders. They are detailed and attractive, and are a pleasure to look at as much as they are dependable for accuracy in minor details.Overall, this is a nice book for anyone with a serious interest in these most colorful soldiers of the 18th Century British Army.

This well go into my Osprey Collection . I have been collecting this series since they first came out in the 70s I am pleased with them .

Very informative book.

The book was in great shape, great information on The highland regt. of the 18th century....a must!!

On page 20 of this book, the author states in reference to the 42nd Reg't "Tartan was originally undifferenced Government sett, but a red over-stripe was added in 1746 for all companies. This was introduced by... Lord John Murray..." and again on the same page in reference to the uniform of the 42nd specific to the Seven Year's War that "Tartan for all companies was the Government sett with red overstripe." If the author had given a citation for either of these, and specifically a citation to a primary source such as a letter from Lord Murray, I would have given it 5 stars. However, it doesn't even have a bibliography. He simply suggests reading three other works (while casting doubts on two of the three) and thanks the staff of two museums. Not exactly anything that one can follow up on with any precision.If anyone out there can help me find a primary source proving the use of the red overstripe by all companies of the 42nd in the Seven Years War, aka French and Indian War, I would appreciate it.

Not a bad booklet, overall. Covers the British Highland regiments raised during this period. Good illustrations of the development of the Highland uniform, with excellent photos of actual parts of the clothing apparel modeled to illustrate how it was actually worn. Regimental histories and eccentricies are not particularly covered, except in the illustration descriptions. Good book for the gamer or uniform enthusiast.

Over the years I have read quite a few swim books and this is definitely in the top echelon.Both the material and the format are excellent.The book is top quality, table size, printed on chromo paper and with excellent color graphics explaining and illustrating the text.The book is organized into three parts - technique, training and open water. There are also appendices on drills and work out plans and references to the Swim Smooth web site.I do not intend to summarize the contents of the book but I would like to point out two major themes:a. the Swim Smooth method has certain fundamentals but is not a one-size-fits-all system. It modifies these fundamentals to different swim types that they identify.b. Although never mentioned by name, the TI method is totally disputed and discredited by the authors. The Swim Smooth method is the antithesis of TI.It should be pointed out that this book deals exclusively with freestyle and with an emphasis on open water swimming. This is reflected in the fact that the underwater dolphin (a major freestyle pool skill) is not covered. Having said that, I truly feel that Swim Smooth will become one of those iconic swim books and is an essential addition to any swim library.Highly recommended.

I am a recreational swimmer who tried to relearn to swim better back in 1998 from Terry Laughlin's book. I have never been on a swim team to get good coaching advice.I have recently looked at a few new and old how-to-swim books. The newer advice is quite different from the older books which encouraged habits that can easily lead to shoulder injuries.1)A new book "Swim Smooth" has the most modern advice of all, along with a fine web site swimsmooth.com with a super free app you can download and watch from any angle and at very slow speed (esp from underneath to see the difference from the old S-shape recommended arm movement for the crawl). Looking through this book a few days ago already has led to a major revision of my freestyle.You can get the essential info from this fun book by just looking at the numerous pictures and reading the captions.My self-taught freestyle stroke has several major flaws, eg. I should not angle my hand sideways on entry which can injure the shoulder and I should not cross the center line on arm extension or pushback (some old books show the arm crossing horizontally under the body) which loses propulsion and leads to being off balance. The entry angle should be at a steep approx 45 degree angle and the hand should tip down for the catch right after full extension (instead of gliding more). And forget about a sideways scull and S-shape arm movement (update: I have added back a partial S movement which seems to flow better with increased speeds if you use fins, plus Olympic swimmers do that too).Anyway, the book "Swim Smooth" and web site (with the downloaded MrSmooth app) is my top choice for a relearn-to-swim-freestyle book for amateurs who have no coach.2)Next in line is the excellent second edition of "Fitness Swimming", pages 1-69, page 86, and pages 119-120 (the rest is workout schedules). This book has by far the best compact explanation of the theory and guidelines for the modern injury-free freestyle . It finally explained to me exactly how to accomplish the 2-beat kick as well as the unfathomable (from other books) 6-beat kick.3)Then there's the other modern swim book that I re-learned to swim from in 1998. Too bad in that book (or even his latest one) there is no good description of the arc the hand travels (ie. S-shape or not) or fundamental principles like the hand must always be inside the elbow distance (otherwise .. injury) and the similar dangers of angling the hand on entry, or of the merits of a steeper hand entry (but see his DVD below). Terry Laughlin's books (latest best all-stroke intro is called "Extraordinary Swimming for every body") have been adopted widely and I still would recommend this book as one of the several must-have's for someone still learning to swim better. If I was teaching someone to swim from ground zero, I would use the exercises to lead up to the crawl in that book's freestyle chapter (which are easier to see/appreciate in the bigger format "Total Immersion Pool Primer", basically drills in balance and body rotation) or in Terry's DVD "Perpetual Motion Freestyle in 10 Lessons", which teaches how to swim by progressive enhancement of fundamental balance and propulsion skills. The graduated drills are clearly demonstrated and the progression to developing the complete stroke and 2-beat flick kick is logical.4)"Learn to Swim in a Weekend" is a super compact (90 pages), all-picture guide to the major strokes plus turning and diving, about 8 easy to look at pages per stroke type. This is a fun book to look through and the pictures are superb in showing the essentials of each stroke.So those are the 4 most essential how-to-swim or how-to-relearn-to-swim-better books I've discovered.Then there's the very old swimming book "Swimming: Steps to Success" which has some bad crawl advice (which was considered good advice in the 1960's), but includes a few non-major strokes such as the sidestroke and the Double Trudgen which I'll learn sometime to amaze folks - I mean, who really knows that stroke nowadays other than ocean lifeguards! The third edition of this book has not changed from the very old first edition, so do not expect modern swimming advice.History: the first-ever "modern" swim book was "Complete Book of Swimming" by James Counsilman (1979) which authors since have liberally copied text from. This was "the" modern theory and how to swim book until the 1990's and has held up remarkably well, plus it's fun to see pictures of Mark Spitz's swim strokes.

This book is very easy to understand, well written and on the cutting edge of swimming. I have read many books on the subject of swimming and most try to get you to swim in one particular way. This is the first book that I have seen that encourages you to swim in the fashion that works best for you depending on a few factors such as body type, the particular distance that you are doing, and whether you are swimming in a pool or open water.I could not put it down and I think that it will be a best seller among swimmers, triathletes and their coaches. It is a must read! But the best part was that I was able to get it instantly for $9.99 on my kindle instead of pre-ordering for $19.37.One thing that should be edited is that on the kindle edition it is hard to read some of the captions on one or two pages.

This is an excellent book! I have this book on Kindle and find it to be invaluable. It's very well written, very insightful, and the authors do an excellent job of getting the point across regardless of your experience level swimming.Even though the title mentions coaching system, this book is a really good reference/instruction guide for swimmers of any level and anybody that's looking to improve for swim skills for pool or open water. Lots of well done illustrations and clearly written.I have been a big fan of the swim smooth approach to swimming. I think this is one of their best efforts yet. Highly recommend this book to swimmers and/or triathletes.

If there is only ONE swim book you ever buy, this should be it. I've made more improvements in the last month than in the past three years. This book is tailored to every swimmer and points out the weaknesses in your stroke. More importantly, it give concrete drills that help correct those stroke flaws. AND.. the drills work. The purpose for each drill is also pointed out. I can't recommend this enough. Better than any other swim instruction I've ever had. I swam a 7.5 mile swim last year...wish I had read this book prior to that!!!
