Review

We Are the parents of a 13 year old, 11 year old and an 11 year old... and we travel with them as much as possible. It s a great learning experience for the whole family. Up until we discovered the FlyingKids Travel Guides, traveling with 3 youngsters often became a test of parental survival. Last year we purchased the guide to Paris and France and were astounded at how much the kids enjoyed them and how much they learned. We've wanted to take the kids to Spain and just bought each one their own FlyingKids Travel Guide to Spain. --Amazon ReviewerWe plan to take our 8 and 11 YO kids to Spain in the spring. They receive this guide as a present and love it from the very first moment. We know the this Kids' guides series as we use their guides in the past, so we were happy to discover that they have also Spain's book so we could take it to our vacation in Spain. This a truly remarkable book. Full of information about the Spanish people, their culture, their food and even the history part is fun and interesting. The kids started to learn few words in Spanish and painted the coloring pages. Kids love this book, learn a lot and have great fun. Highly recommended --Catain JhoThis is a great book, especially for homeschool families, who create interdisciplinary projects to learn history, geography, and culture. This book has it all and even has space in the back to create a travel journal. --Chris

This is a short coloring book / activity book with very little travel information that is of interest to kids older than 6 or 7. Cover really basic information like the color of Spain's flag is red and yellow - so color it on the next page. My 10 year old flipped through it for 2 minutes and threw it to the side and never looked at again.

Great book! My 10-year old loved reviewing it before we left for Spain and found it to be helpful while we were there.

An easy and fun read for school aged children to learn about Spain. I'd like to see more information and more cities, but is a great introduction.

Love this book. Bought it because our family is from Spain. Lots of interesting facts, games and pictures. Didnt realize this is written for someone actually going to visit Spain which is really cool if you are. But fun even if you're not.

The whole family loved this book, especially the kids (7 and 10)! We plan a family vacation in Spain and this book looks fun and interesting. We purchased the digital version, and we're going to purchase the printed book so the kids can solve the puzzles and use the diary at the end of the book. The language section is also really handy for everyone! What a great idea and a perfect present.

Our eight year old grandson who has traveled to Europe and is going again this fall loves this!

It's absolutely a fun book, my daughter just wants to keep reading it

The book wasn't appropriate for my 6 year old son.

This book is clearly biased and has glaring errors.Editing/typing error example: "Regarding violent victimization rates by urbanization, generally victimization rates are highest in rural areas and decline in suburban areas, with the lowest rates in rural areas." (page 47-48 in 5th edition)Wait, what? How is it that victimization rates are both higher AND lower in rural areas? Granted, basic logic suggests that victimization should be higher in URBAN areas as opposed to rural areas simply based on the fact that urban areas are higher in population. Regardless, for a supposedly highly regarded textbook that has been printed in at least 5 editions...glaring errors like this should rarely (if ever) occur. As such, even this error alone causes me to read with extreme caution.Bias example:These were hypothetical situations described in the book. "Let us imagine a rural county in the northwestern United States, however, where there are no African American residents. The absence of African Americans from juries would represent a racial disparity, but not discrimination."Okay, that's fair. But then this hypothetical situation was posited: "Imagine that a police department arrested only African Americans for suspected felonies and never arrested a white person. That situation would represent racial discrimination in arrest." (page 27 in the 5th edition) Why does that represent racial discrimination? Based on the vague information given, you can not just ASSUME that racial discrimination took place. A logical person should not jump to such a definitive conclusion with so few details. This book is wrought with similar "conclusions" taking facts and interpreting them in the authors' own views to support their claims. I do not find that they are lying about the regurgitated statistics that they pull from the BJS, NCVS, et cetera... But as the authors have already pointed out "After all, statistics can be interpreted in many different ways" (page 4 in 5th edition) and they willingly do so throughout the text. Early on, the authors admit that statistics provided by the previously mentioned agencies and others are not perfect and likely do not accurately represent the topics studied (e.g. Hispanics are sometimes grouped together with Caucasians)...yet, these flawed statistics are consistently used and then interpreted in a matter-of-fact fashion that supports the authors' biases.I have the misfortune of reading this "text" for a college class. I am extremely disappointed that my college has decided to choose such a woeful excuse for an "academic text". If you share this misfortune, I please urge you to read it (or anything deemed "academic") with a grain of salt--everyone has an agenda. You need to sort through the facts yourself and come to the conclusion that supports the evidence.

This book in a nutshell: African Americans are over-represented in every facet of the criminal justice system, second once in a while to Hispanics. But almost never. This is by far one of the worst textbooks I have ever had the misfortune to read. As other reviewers have mentioned, the authors contradict themselves, a lot of "information" provided makes absolutely no sense and they ARE biased. Another thing worth noting is that some of the charts they use/reference from other source make absolutely no sense whatsoever. For example, Table 9.4 has a column labeled Total but none of the numbers add up to the total, whether you choose to read the numbers continuing down the column or the numbers in the adjacent rows and/or columns. Furthermore, if you're doing the online version with Cengage, they assign about three chapters to each "section" so when you go online to do the chapter exercises, it's not immediately clear that you have to do Section 5 assignments for chapters 7, 8 and 9. Ridiculous. If you are a teacher, please do NOT subject your students to this crappy textbook. There are many other books and other information out there to reference and it's probably a great deal more entertaining/interesting/unbiased/useful than this drivel.

I hated this book with a passion. The authors are super biased and use manipulative language to deceptively push their agenda. It's a college text though, so if your teacher chose it, you're pretty much stuck. Just take all that crap with a large grain of salt. If you are a college professor reading this, please choose a better book for your students.

I like the book overall, it has some very interesting information included in it, however, I find the book to be a little redundant in parts. Some sections could be much shorter with the exact same point given. There are LOTS of statistics in this book as well, which I would like to see less of. Overall though, it has met my expectations and is not a hard book to read and follow.

It’s just a book, no reason to give it less than 5 stars

Used for school

Came in good condition

“This is a masterpiece of science and spirit, love over law, and the stunning biological truth of the capacity for transcendence that the universe has placed within us. Here, in brilliant and incisive words, is the foundation for a new mind and a new world.” (Jean Houston, author of A Passion for the Possible and Jump Time)"The Biology of Transcendence will transform your worldview and change forever your understanding of our past, present, and future. (Thom Hartmann, author of The Last Hours of Ancient Sunlight)"I've spent over thirty years pioneering wellness programs, always trying to grasp why it is such a struggle for people to attain and maintain the well-being that is their birthright. In the last decade I finally came to appreciate what Pearce discovered long ago: that the heart and key to wellness lies in how we nurture our young--enabling them to thrive, rather than merely survive." (John W. Travis, M.D., M.P.H., author of Simply Well and Wellness Workbook)"Joseph Chilton Pearce has profoundly altered my view of religion and culture and has left me with both the understanding and the tools to go beyond limitations to the joy of love and all its possibilities." From the Back Cover

NEW SCIENCE / PHILOSOPHY “The Biology of Transcendence will transform your worldview and change forever your understanding of our past, present, and future. Riveting, insightful, and penetrating, Pearce has laid out one of the most startling and powerful visions of our future. . . . You won’t be able to put this book down, and when you’ve read it, you won’t be able to stop talking about it with everybody you know.” --Thom Hartmann, author of The Last Hours of Ancient Sunlight “This is a masterpiece of science and spirit, love over law, and the stunning biological truth of the capacity for transcendence that the universe has placed within us. Here, in brilliant and incisive words, is the foundation for a new mind and a new world.” --Jean Houston, author of A Passion for the Possible and Jump Time: Shaping Your Future in a World of Radical Change Why do we seem stuck in a culture of violence and injustice? How is it that we can recognize the transcendent ideal represented by figures such as Jesus, Lao-tzu, and many others who have walked among us and yet not seem to reach the same state? In The Biology of Transcendence Joseph Chilton Pearce examines the current biological understanding of our neural organization to address how we can go beyond the limitations and constraints of our current capacities of body and mind--how we can transcend. Recent research in the neurosciences and neurocardiology identifies the four neural centers of our brain and indicates that a fifth such center is located in the heart. This research reveals that the evolutionary structure of our brain and its dynamic interactions with our heart are designed by nature to reach beyond our current evolutionary capacities. We are quite literally, made to transcend. Pearce explores how this biological imperative drives our life into ever-greater realms of being--even as the cultural imperative of social conformity and behavior counters this genetic heritage, blocks our transcendent capacities, and breeds violence in all its forms. The conflict between religion and spirit is an important part of this struggle. But each of us may overthrow these cultural imperatives to reach “unconflicted behavior,” wherein heart and mind-brain resonate in synchronicity, opening us to levels of possibility beyond the ordinary. JOSEPH CHILTON PEARCE is the author of The Crack in the Cosmic Egg, Magical Child, and Evolution’s End. For the past twenty-five years, he has taught about the changing needs of children and the development of human society. He lives in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia.

What a good writer, so engaging even when dealing with scientific and metaphysically esoteric ideas. Chapter on how St. Paul derailed Jesus's message in favor of a rule-bound dogma is worth the admission price! Best description of what went wrong when a transcendent spiritual message gets interpreted and promoted by a lesser soul. Rest of book is also fascinating in the way it looks at how our enculturation stops our mental and spiritual growth potential, and how we can use this realization to get it back.

On page 137, Pearce writes, "Keeping their natural world out of reach of children seems to be our national passion. In fact, greater numbers of children are brought up in the artificial world of cement, asphalt, plastics, and the virtual reality of television, while fewer each year experience a world of nature and the unfolding of organic life."Then, in the Epilogue, on page 259 we read, "We have ignored for half a century or more the studies that show some 95 perecent of all a child's learning or "structures of knowledge" form automatically in direct response to interactions with the environment, while only about 5 percent form as a result of our verbal teaching or intellectual instruction."Pearce further tells us how there are certain international organizations with members who intentionally raise their children in "living" environments. These children are said to possess unusual intelligence and sometimes clairvoyant-like abilities. One example on page 250 sites a mother who diliberately gave birth to her son in the ocean of the Bahamas,..."about as far from a hospital you can get."As the author of "The Holy Order of Water", I firmly believe that Pearce is doing his best to spiritually guide us toward fostering a new generation of children to help save humanity. With the way things are today, I think this concept has much merit.

Good Stuff. This, along with The Biology of Belief, by Bruce Lipton, should be a requirement for the high school curriculum. I believe that this would help mitigate the continued alienation we feel within our society. My kudos to Mr. Pierce

In his latest book, Pearce argues that we are all biologically programmed to transcend physical reality and experience other, more subtle realms of existence. Our brains and bodies are continually evolving to allow us to have contact with more of the inner and outer universe. We have a choice to raise children with either repressive patterns and limiting belief systems or with evolutionary, expansive ideas. Unfortunately, our society usually chooses the former which creates "conflicted behavior" and all sorts of negative experiences in our lives.Pearce examines how the human brain has evolved, how indigenous societies raise their children and create an open approach to life in general. He introduces a lot of new research into the workings of the heart that shows it is much more than a pump. The heart has its own intelligence that is capable of integrating with and balancing that of the brain. However, due to an overly narrow interpretation of Christianity and also a fear of nature, our society suppresses the intelligence of the heart and all the wisdom it is trying to give us. As a result, we are emotionally and spiritually impoverished and cut off from nature.Overall, this is another positive, forward-looking book from Pierce with a lot of stimulating ideas. His personal stories are a little hard to follow at times, but overall his message is solidly delivered. He encourages us to connect with the flow of our life energy in order to live more naturally and harmoniously.(Dr. Simeon Hein is the author of Opening Minds: A Journey of Extraordinary Encounters, Crop Circles, and Resonance, and the forthcoming Planetary Intelligence: 101 Easy Steps to Energy, Well-Being, and Natural Insight.)

Joseph Pearce's insights are valid, authentic and speaks to the mind and heart directly. His Book on the on the Biology of Transcendence takes the reader on, not just an outer journey of how the brain has evolved and developed over time, but takes us on an inner journey that shows the reader that he must connect directly to his 5th brain.... the heart. Mr. Pearce does not call it the 5th brain but shows that the heart is a brain that organises developementally, via feedback loops, the growth of the whole brain system. This work takes the reader on a deep investigation of the formation of the Heart/ Brain connection that one can experiences personally as a witness to Pearce's arguemnets and investigations. I was overjoyed with the work and it lead me to read several of his other books. I've passed it on to my daughter who, being in the throws of her last great neuronal pruning that occurs at age 21 or so and she absorbed it. And tells me:"I can speak to the heart dad' and it answered me, I acted on its direction, and it was amazing". Invest some time with Mr. Pearce and he will lead you to resolution of much personal suffering.

Thought to provoke. Never stop searching for deeper truths Perception changes biology when we manage our energy inteliigentl.

Very interesting! Still I had difficulty accepting the idea of the Hawking radiation. If the radiation happens at the event horizon, that surface exists relative to an observer at infinite distance. I guess that a closer observer will see an event horizon that is slightly closer to the black hole. Since the even horizon is a particle-antiparticle splitter, how could it be so relative to an observer. Would the hawking radiation depend on the observer? The closer observer would see the infinite observed event horizon as ordinary space, an because of that virtual particles would not split and radiate. May be I am "not even wrong."

An amazing field to read about, and an amazing book to read about it.But be advised: this is not easy reading - in comparison, for example, to Bill Bryson's great book "A Short History of Nearly Everything," or even Stephen Hawking's "A Brief History of Time" or Carl Sagan's "Cosmos." It's not a starter book - but it is mind bending once you read the 'starter' books. It's hard to describe how brilliant Leonard Susskind is. What dawned on him is Einsteinian.

I am not a physicist but, as an avid history and current events scholar and reader, I have a great interest in breaking out of my comfort zone from time to time. Physics is great because it is so devoid of human imperfection - except when we discuss the history of science. This book is a bit of history of science - namely the debate of the issue of black holes and information loss - and a lot of physics theory. It necessarily starts from the beginning of basic relativity, nuclear physics, and thermodynamics. This part is the easiest to understand (being well covered in your average "popular" physics book), and takes up a solid half or more of the book. But that's ok...the theories are put into the context of black hole physics. The last third or less of the book really dives into the most abstract part and the hardest to understand: dimensions, string theory, holograms, etc. I got 75% of the first half, and about 25% of the last half; with about 10% of the last few chapters. Susskind admits that these are hard issues to understand, and he did his level best to write it out. But he is basically trying to put words to numbers, which is well nigh impossible for this field.I think the book's greatest fault is the subject; it's simply not (for me) a fascinating subject. Other books on multiverse, anti-matter, dark matter, and relativity are more interesting - perhaps because they are simply more tangible for my non-physics mind. But I learned something from this book, and feel a bit wiser for the effort.Liam H Dooleywww.liamhdooley.com

My BS in physics is over forty years old. This was a great way to catch up. I had forgotten that string theory was beginning to play a big role in nuclear physics. When the book pointed out some of the things that were well proven about it at the nuclear scale, it reduced my scepticism about all the mathematical hard labor being devoted to string theory in order to understand what is happening at much higher energies. As usual, physicist have looked at very simplified special cases in order to make the math tractable and clarify basic processes. The book explains many of these clearly. It is also a reminder that the most advanced human minds barely have the capacity to begin unravelling quantum mechanics and cosmology at their limits, and a lot more humility would probably be appropriate!

This book is not quite what it seems. It is a book more about the conversations and histories of the "Black Hole War" than the science behind the black hole war.The book can be divded into 2 halves. The first half is the bascis of physics (entropy, gravity, relativity...etc) which would probably be hard to digest without some prior knowledge in physics. Then the author shifts gear towards the "war," but spent way too much time dissecting and redissecting the same concepts ad nauseum, while digressing way too frequently to irrevalent side stories/interviews that seem to serve no purpose than to take up pages. With better organization and editing, this book could have easily been 1/3 of its current size without loosing vital information. But my biggest disappoint in this book is, while it does offer a number of insights into the current state of physics, the way he introduces concepts are at best haphazard - he frequently and abruptly does leaps of logic between concepts, and often doesn't fully explain the very concepts he set out to explain. And some concepts he basically just states "so and so did some calculation and found out what I said before is really true!" This is great for him but thats not exactly why I bought this book.In the end, in trying to be do too many things at the same time, what could have been an otherwise incredibly insightful book into cutting edge science failed to live up to its true potential.

A delightful take on the science and process of rationalizing quantum mechanics and relativistic theory. I picked up the base don a reference from Brian Greene's "The Hidden Reality". With many of the "pop-physics" books, I seem to be able to keep up for the first 75%, but it gets pretty bumpy toward the end. This was no exception.Dr. Susskind does a fantastic job of taking the reader from a general understanding of quantum physics and building, slowly but surely, a case for his argument with Stephen Hawking's proclamation that information is lost in a black hole. I enjoyed both his technical descriptions and thought analogies. The real differentiator between this book and many others is the backdrop of the people and places involved. In between scientific insights is a good deal of the social and emotional events surrounding the research. A great change of pace for this type of material.
