A lot of people seem to really like this series. Then again, a lot of people seem to like McDonalds food. This is some of the worst science fiction I've read in years. First--the idea that Earth's mercenary forces would, for no good reason at all, adopt the command structure (roughly) of Rome is ludicrous and the author doesn't even attempt to justify it. Second--the protagonist is fairly young, living with his parents, and in the first few pages of the book ends up signing up for a 6-year stint and shipping off a few hours later. He doesn't contact his parents at all? He doesn't miss them? This alone makes the protagonist a 2D cardboard character (as are all the other characters I've encountered). Then there is the technology, and it is universally "deus ex machina"--technology that performs miracles, with no attempt at explaining anything about it. The revival stuff is complete BS. Many other science fiction books, some excellent ones, include revivification as a possibility. But you are ALWAYS revived to the point of the last full backup. There is no way these soldiers are backed up so completely that, after waking up in a new body, they remember their LAST FEW SECONDS OF DYING. I guess the author wanted to include this so he could have the characters get all emotional--well, as emotional as 2D cardboard characters can get--about the experience they went through. But it is impossible to suspend disbelief, and if disbelief cannot be suspended, then the book is worthless. I got about halfway through and then couldn't go any further. I know it is going to be more "go into battle, get shot at a lot, kill some aliens, die, get revived, pretend to have meaningful interactions with the other cardboard characters". No thank you.

From My Goodreads Review Number 54:This review is on Steel World by B.V. Larson. This is the first book I have read by this writer. It won’t be the last.To say the least, I was not expecting this type of Military Science Fiction. For starters, who would think that human mercenary soldiers fighting saurian reptiles, which included raptor-looking dinosaurs called “Dinos” for short and huge T-Rex looking theropods called “Juggers” on a hot, dry planet called Cancri-9, would be so entertaining and memorable. Cancri-9 is called a “steel world” because it is a mineral rich carbide planet made of iron and carbon and other rare metals in high demand by the alien rulers. In the story, James McGill is an underachieving, online video gaming, third year college student who is forced to drop out of college when his family runs out of money. He decides it is time to leave home and get a job. In his case, James thought it would be a snap to join one of the space-going legions and become a mercenary that fights wars on contract for the Hegemony and Galactic Governments. You see, humans are only allowed to exist if Earth sends human legions to fight other aliens on contract as needed. The Galactics run the show and humans provide the muscle under strict conditions. The good news is most soldiers survive to fight another day, even if killed in battle, unless you get “permed” by accident or some other unfortunate circumstance. You will understand the situation a lot better when you read the book.Unfortunately, it is a lot tougher than James thought to join one of the most popular legions. It seems they only want people to do what they are told, follow the rules and not be independent thinkers who can cause trouble. James ends up signing with Legion Varus, a bottom of the barrel, loser outfit many people think. It seems the legion gets “wiped” a lot. So begins James six-year military experience. This book reminds me of several other great stories I read with similar themes such as The Forever War by Joe Haldeman, Old Man’s War by John Scalzi and Armor by John Steakley. All these books are original stories with good plots, entertaining action scenes and memorable characters. What makes this story so entertaining is the style of writing. B.V. Larson writes the story in the first person, which makes James seem so realistic, unpredictable and human. The dialog is humorous, blunt, irreverent, witty, descriptive and fast paced. I laughed out loud several times as James examined his dire situation and cursed the outcome.I give this book five stars because it is original and imaginative, with memorable characters, extremely well written dialog and numerous battle scenes full of surprises. This book will end up as a classic military science fiction story. I hope B.V Larson writes a sequel. Enjoy.

This is a hard to put down little book. I'm not the first to say that you'll read the second half of it in one sitting. I didn't believe the previous reviewer until I found myself doing exactly that. The characters just make you want to keep reading, once you get used to them, and the bizzare twists and turns Mr. Larson comes up with in this book don't let you put the book down. I mean, where in the world did he come up with the notions he played out in Steel World???... from beginning to end. I was honestly suprised over and over with where this book went. I couldn't have thunk some of these crazy deals, much less predict them reading. I haven't had a novel raise my eyebrows like that in a long time. Lots of ground combat, believable and entertaining characters, and plot twists that will leave you scratching your head and cheering... what's not to like? Not much. This is the best nice low price e-book I've picked up in a long while. I sure hope there will be follow ups, but he's set a pretty high bar with this one.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and highly recommend it to anyone interested in ballet, 1930s performing arts more generally, and George Balanchine. This compelling work is a must-read!

What a fascinating read! This book debunks many myths about George Balanchine while providing an engaging look at his influence on American ballet. Steichen draws you into the world of Balanchine and his partner Lincoln Kirstein in the 1930s and their collaborative and somewhat challenging “enterprise”. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in American dance and the performing arts in general!

Don’t know much about ballet lore?Read this book to find out more.Balanchine and Kirstein - quite a team,Had a vision, a hope, a dream.Steichen gives each man his proper due,Expands your knowledge with his view.I thoroughly enjoyed this extensively researched book about Balanchine and Kirstein's collaboration.Surprise tidbits abound - for example, who knew Balachine worked with Josephine Baker and the Nicholas Brothers in the 1936 edition of The Ziegfeld Follies?I recommend this book to anyone who loves ballet and musical theatre/dance.

This book is extremely well written and researched. While academic, it is entirely accessible and provides a fascinating new look at the genesis of the well known Balanchine and shines an important spotlight on the less well known but equally important Kirstein. A must-read for anyone interested in American ballet and performing arts.

Insightful and wonderfully written, the vast number and array of sources cited in the book are fantastic!

Great balance of historical insight and entertaining prose.

In Balanchine and Kirstein’s American Enterprise, James Steichen traces the activities of choreographer George Balanchine and arts presenter Lincoln Kirstein between 1933 and 1940, i.e. the crucial period between Balanchine’s arrival in the United States and their establishment of the New York City Ballet. This span of years is frequently glossed over in Balanchine scholarship as a blip in history’s trajectory, an insignificantly small wobble on the choreographer’s inevitable path to becoming the most important artist in American ballet. Steichen instead shows the twists and turns that Balanchine and his collaborators took. In doing so, he brings Balanchine back to earth and reveals that the formation of the New York City Ballet, rather than a foregone conclusion, was the product of many fortuitous accidents and difficult decisions. Steichen draws on a wealth of primary sources (including numerous eye-popping quotes from Kirstein’s private journals) to show the inner workings of the enterprise. He reveals much that is currently unknown or overlooked about Balanchine’s artistic style during this period. Sometimes that means bringing to life works that have been forgotten (such as the farcical Alma Mater) and other times revealing the hidden pasts of modern day classics (Serenade and Concerto Barocco). And he presents it all with such an engaging writing style that it will satisfy both dance scholars and ballet enthusiasts. A perfect book to satisfy all the ballet lovers in your life. I can’t recommend it highly enough.

Author James Steichen had access to previously unavailable resources, including journals of Lincoln Kirstein, Balanchine's American sponsor and partner. He mines these and other sources to tell the engaging story of Balanchine's early years in the U.S., when nothing was certain about his future success or that of ballet itself in this country as an art form. Steichen relates with highly readable detail the struggles of the two men to find the best mix of dance and performance to develop a relationship with elite and mass audiences. Who knew Balanchine also worked extensively on Broadway and in Hollywood? The role of Edward Warburg in assuring financial support for an artistic enterprise when he'd never seen a ballet was based on his friendship and trust in Kirstein. So much could have gone wrong and almost did, several times. Steichen writes of these times in a way that makes the tale almost a cliff hanger, when the reader knows there's a great ending. But the beginning, well, that's what he's reporting to us, in all its unknown. He tells the tale well, for this aficionado of all things Balanchine. If you want to read every end note, go for it. This book is incredibly well sourced. Or read for the pure pleasure of the early history of American ballet.
