I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and highly recommend it to anyone interested in ballet, 1930s performing arts more generally, and George Balanchine. This compelling work is a must-read!

What a fascinating read! This book debunks many myths about George Balanchine while providing an engaging look at his influence on American ballet. Steichen draws you into the world of Balanchine and his partner Lincoln Kirstein in the 1930s and their collaborative and somewhat challenging “enterprise”. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in American dance and the performing arts in general!

Don’t know much about ballet lore?Read this book to find out more.Balanchine and Kirstein - quite a team,Had a vision, a hope, a dream.Steichen gives each man his proper due,Expands your knowledge with his view.I thoroughly enjoyed this extensively researched book about Balanchine and Kirstein's collaboration.Surprise tidbits abound - for example, who knew Balachine worked with Josephine Baker and the Nicholas Brothers in the 1936 edition of The Ziegfeld Follies?I recommend this book to anyone who loves ballet and musical theatre/dance.

This book is extremely well written and researched. While academic, it is entirely accessible and provides a fascinating new look at the genesis of the well known Balanchine and shines an important spotlight on the less well known but equally important Kirstein. A must-read for anyone interested in American ballet and performing arts.

Insightful and wonderfully written, the vast number and array of sources cited in the book are fantastic!

Great balance of historical insight and entertaining prose.

In Balanchine and Kirstein’s American Enterprise, James Steichen traces the activities of choreographer George Balanchine and arts presenter Lincoln Kirstein between 1933 and 1940, i.e. the crucial period between Balanchine’s arrival in the United States and their establishment of the New York City Ballet. This span of years is frequently glossed over in Balanchine scholarship as a blip in history’s trajectory, an insignificantly small wobble on the choreographer’s inevitable path to becoming the most important artist in American ballet. Steichen instead shows the twists and turns that Balanchine and his collaborators took. In doing so, he brings Balanchine back to earth and reveals that the formation of the New York City Ballet, rather than a foregone conclusion, was the product of many fortuitous accidents and difficult decisions. Steichen draws on a wealth of primary sources (including numerous eye-popping quotes from Kirstein’s private journals) to show the inner workings of the enterprise. He reveals much that is currently unknown or overlooked about Balanchine’s artistic style during this period. Sometimes that means bringing to life works that have been forgotten (such as the farcical Alma Mater) and other times revealing the hidden pasts of modern day classics (Serenade and Concerto Barocco). And he presents it all with such an engaging writing style that it will satisfy both dance scholars and ballet enthusiasts. A perfect book to satisfy all the ballet lovers in your life. I can’t recommend it highly enough.

Author James Steichen had access to previously unavailable resources, including journals of Lincoln Kirstein, Balanchine's American sponsor and partner. He mines these and other sources to tell the engaging story of Balanchine's early years in the U.S., when nothing was certain about his future success or that of ballet itself in this country as an art form. Steichen relates with highly readable detail the struggles of the two men to find the best mix of dance and performance to develop a relationship with elite and mass audiences. Who knew Balanchine also worked extensively on Broadway and in Hollywood? The role of Edward Warburg in assuring financial support for an artistic enterprise when he'd never seen a ballet was based on his friendship and trust in Kirstein. So much could have gone wrong and almost did, several times. Steichen writes of these times in a way that makes the tale almost a cliff hanger, when the reader knows there's a great ending. But the beginning, well, that's what he's reporting to us, in all its unknown. He tells the tale well, for this aficionado of all things Balanchine. If you want to read every end note, go for it. This book is incredibly well sourced. Or read for the pure pleasure of the early history of American ballet.
