Review
LIBRARY JOURNAL (STARRED) -- Harry Dresden, Chicago's wizard for hire, has had a hard time of it lately. Facing down powerful enemies is finally taking its toll, and the flame of his anger is growing daily, fanned by guilt and loss. During this low point, a senior member of the White Council of Wizards, Listens To-Wind, asks Harry to help investigate a string of brutal murders in rural Mississippi. As the case gets under way, an unknown law enforcement group wants Harry and Listen To-Wind out of the way, and the Dog Men, thought to be the culprits in the killings, are not who they seem. Meanwhile in the town, a strong force of ghouls has gone undetected, until now. Ultimately, Dresden has to temper his rage and convince the Dog Men to help him battle the ghouls, otherwise they are all doomed. Complementing the text from Butcher (The Cinder Spires) and Powers (G.I. Joe; Drafted), artists Galindo (Red Sonja) and Mohan (Dean Koontz's Frankenstein) create stunning illustrations, every panel and page more exciting than the last. A slow start picks up to a heart-pounding pace that wraps up nicely.Verdict Butcher's many fans will not be disappointed with the action, and readers need no prior familiarity with “The Dresden Files” to enjoy this first volume in a stand-alone graphic series (collects six single issues). Highly recommended for older teens and adults.-Laura McKinley, Huntington P.L., NY

Warning! None of the Dog Men books are by Jim Butcher. While I knew it was a graphic novel, I didn't realize it wasn't written by Butcher. I had gotten the complete story all in one and about three pages in I realized there was something wrong. This wasn't Jim Butcher's writing. I went back and checked. Sure enough, it's written by Mark Powers. It turns out, it's "based on characters by Jim Butcher". Powers, it turns out is a well known comic writer. Unfortunately, I wasn't looking for a comic book. I was expecting a graphic novel by one of my favorite writers. If I was in my early to mid teens I'd probably love this. To bad, I'm 67 and grew up on Stan Lee. Next time I'll know enough to check the author even if I think I know what's going on. They really should make it known in a better way that the original author didn't write the book.
From start to finish, Dog Men is laced with mediocrity. From obvious typos to a rather glaring continuity error between chapters, the lack of quality is clear. The story itself is a fairly predictable one-note affair that lacks any depth or charm. It plays out more like a work of fan fiction. If all you want is an angry Harry Dresden blowing things up, then this might satisfy. If you are looking for a Dresden story of any significant substance, I recommend skipping this one.
I have to admit, I'm biased. I will probably never give anything of Butcher's lower than a 4/5. That being said, if I were pretending to be even a little objective I would still say this is an excellent graphic novel on its own merits. Certainly worth reading if you love the Dresden Files like I do because it is an original story (that is, not taken from one of his books). Definitely scratches the itch between full Dresden novels.I bought the electronic version so I can't speak to the quality of the hard or soft cover versions. As with some of the other graphic novels it suffers from a little editorial malfeasance. In other words it has a few typos. Still, the art is good and the story is excellent. It refers back to some other events so it helps if you've read everything else Butcher has written (which, I mean, why haven't you?) but it's not necessary to following the story. As with Butcher's other works, this is an action/mystery/urban fantasy. Harry Dresden gets called in to a backwoods town to investigate a supernatural crime scene and it takes about a minute before all Hell breaks loose and Dresden has to magically slug his way out of a slew of monsters, thanks in no small part to his trusty canine companion. It's got magic, it's got action, it's got Dresden. Not much else needs to be said.
As others have said this is a slow paced story, but once the action heats it takes off. And if you're waiting for the next Dresden Files this is a nice way to take the edge off and enjoy a story about one of your favorite heroes. Over all I enjoyed the story and like the development of Harry's relationship with Listens to the Wind.
Poorly written with a number of typos. In a few places there are random pieces of dialog that don't seem like they belong. A lot of art errors, such as cliffhanger in the first issue that is seemingly followed up in the beginning of the second but those characters are wearing completely different cloths. There's also a few places where to dialog references things the art never showed. I'd highly recommend skipping this series
I enjoyed this graphic novel as I have all of Jim Butcher's work since I first discovered 'Welcome to the Jungle'. Even though the artists have changed over the years giving the characters a somewhat different look, Jim's work has only improved like fine wine with the passage of time. I fell in love with the main character, Harry and his sidekicks right alongside his cat and dog and his wise cracking advisor who resides in a human skull! What's not to like? The fact that l've come to the end having read them all. I've also enjoyed reading his other Harry Dresden books as well.
This book was NOT written by Jim Butcher and the story line and dialogue shows it. The art was good but the rest was not up to the standard of the previous Dresden graphic novels.
SpoilersPros: Overarching story is good. Nice to see Listens to Wind.Cons: Grammar is pretty bad. Should have spent more time on the main plotline instead of Dresdens internal problems. Also L2W didn't do anything, which was disappointing.
