The Marathon Conspiracy is a murder mystery set in Athens at the time of Pericles. Nicolaos, the main character is a sleuth who is hired by the politician Pericles to solve the mystery surrounding the death of the tyrant Hippias, which appears to have taken place shortly after the Battle of Marathon thirty years previously. The body is discovered by two young girls who are students at school run by priestesses of Artemis for upper class Athenian Girls near the town of Brauron. The girls attending the school are called “Little Bears†because bears are supposed to have been servants of Artemis. One of the girls dies a gruesome death, supposedly at the claws of a bear, although there had been no bears in Southern Attica for decades, and the other young girl disappears.Nicolaos, at age 21 has already completed his hoplite service and is engaged to be married to Diotima, a priestess of Artemis. Diotima is a graduate of the school at Brauron, and she is adept with the bow and arrow. Nicholaos and Diotima work as a team. Diotima is the daughter of Euterpe, a high class courtesan, and her husband Pythax, Chief of the city guard of Athens. Diotima’s natural father is deceased. Nicolaos is the son of Sophroniscus, a sculptor, and Phaenarete. He is also the older brother of Socrates, an irritating adolescent whose teacher is about to expel him from his school because he is constantly asking questions.Corby’s book is full of humor despite the somewhat horrific events. He delves deeply into Athenian history and culture and will inspire the reader to do further investigation. Hippias was a reviled tyrant and there were two separate conspiracies against him, the first of which which was brutally suppressed and the second successful. Hippias escaped to the Persians and persuaded them to attack Athens and restore him to power, but the Persians were defeated at the Battle of Marathon despite out-numbering the Greeks nearly ten to one. After that, Hippias disappeared until his body is discovered in a cave near Brauron. When the body is discovered, thirty years after his death, all the middle-aged Athenians running for office flock to Nicolaos’ house eager to confess to the “crime.†Such a confession, if confirmed, would make an Athenian politician’s career. The Marathon Conspiracy is a delightful book which I enjoyed from beginning to end.
The fourth entry into Nico's crime solving career in Ancient Athens. Back in Athens with a marriage contract signed and wedding date set, preparations must be interrupted when the possible skeleton pf Athen's last tyrant are found by two girls out in the country along with some private papers. One girl is dead and the other is now missing. I had some of the pieces but I never quite put the story together on my own. Quite liked the resolution and character arcs.
In short, I liked the previous novels better. I did enjoy learning about divorce law for men and women--and how they differed. I think the cover is misleading and really don't see how the bear added to the story--beyond some pretty simple plot manipulation. If you are bent on reading the series, as I am, go ahead. No harm done. But I don't think it lives up to the first novels in the series.
This is the second book I've read in this series and was not at all disappointed. The characters are well developed and delightful. The mystery is sufficiently complex to keep my interest and the humor is delightful without detracting from the plot. The writing is outstanding and makes it a very easy read. Best of all, the author gives a very good feel for life in ancient Greece and his comments about the real people and events that underlie the book are not to be missed. I will definitely read more by this author. .
I just read this book a second time and was even more impressed by how Gary Korby manages to meld his knowledge of ancient Athens with the trope of a modern mystery novel. Good characters, great history and an intricate plot. Well done!
I have read all of this series so far. While I have enjoyed all of the stories, this is my favorite by far. The history behind the story is fascinating and the authors use of it is clever. The story is enhanced by the author's delightful sense of humor. I laughed out loud many times. The insight into Athenian family life and the lives of Athenian women and girls was interesting and not something I had seen before. I can't wait for the next installment!
A little slow going and not so compelling as the earlier books in the series. Nico is on the verge of marrying Diotima and is investigating a corpse of an Athenian tyrant who sided with the Persians during the Battle of Marathon; the corpse seems to be connected to deaths at a girls' finishing school at a temple of Artemis (enter a bear). The context here is more social (women, girls, fathers and husbands, priestesses, war veterans) than political.
Corby knows his Greek culture and infuses it in the story telling in a subtle but powerful manner. I normally do not read historical fiction, but this reads like a good old fashion murder mystery with a Greek culture/history subtext. LOVE IT!!
